cam/timing belt advice please

Post by 2newbies » Fri Jul 25, 2014 6:49 pm

HI everyone,I'm looking to have the cam/belt timing belt changed, and I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on afew points....firstly,does the cooling system have to be broken into,(i'm planning to use the chap who services our other car and also the bongo, I would rather he doesn't get involved with the cooling system).
Secondly, can the belt be changed from underneath if put on a ramp rather than taking the centre console etc off........many thanks Paul.

I'm pretty sure:

1 - No

2 - No
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

What engine? For a diesel you don't need to break into the coolant and you can do most of it from below, but it's much easier to take the centre 'saddle' off so you have full access. You could also check the valve clearances while you're at it.

May be worth taking opportunity to change the water pump while you've got it all apart.

I'm planning to replace the cam belt soon (diesel).

Wondering if it makes sense to replace the cam shaft seal at the same time or are the two jobs vastly different?

I'm assuming that the ubiquitous 'Bongo weep' is via this seal.

Then there's the water pump as another 'might as well while we're at it'. Is the list likely to be never ending?

Thanks.

What doesn't help is living in a Bongo expertise free zone!

Last cam belt I did myself was on a 1983 Honda Quintet (absolute doddle), not so sure about something I can't look at in a straight line and I didn't need reading glasses back then either.

Hi
I did mine from the top....and that business with varifocals I know too well...   ...regarding the mirror....err....I took 3 days to do mine, as I can't bend for long, and the ol' joints play up...SO...I took several goes at looking at the mirror on different occasions, and at the last "effort", got 2 other opinions....    ...It seems we were right!...It went much better afterwards!    ...mind you, it was like the blind leading the blind sighting along an imaginary rifle barrel!!!!
Cheers
