Thermometer thoughts

Post by BongoBongo123 » Mon Jul 14, 2014 10:32 am

Just wondering considering the useless bongo temp gauge if one of these clamped to a pipe would be a useful indicator, you could get to know the temp of a normal working engine and if you glane once in a while you will see if abnormal temperatures are being reached.

Now me being tight I had a good look around at alternatives and tried some out.
The problems are reliability and speed of change once the temp starts to alter, the cheap ones just arnt reliable and many are so slow to change its not worth it, remember it will be fitted to a vehicle so will encounter a bit of vibration.
I have one of these and I am 100% happy with it

That is spot on.. I think I am going to try and swap/upgrade the coolant alarm for that sensor.

You can get the Coolant alarm and sensor built in to one unit or as two separate units as I did

I've got one of these too, as have hundreds of Bongoers, my attitude in the end was it was pointless risking straying from that to save 1 or 2 pounds when the engine replacement would be thousands!

I think the thermometer is a better plan for me now I am aware it exists. I dropped them a line.

Some will say "well HE would say that". But that is not really a practical solution to reading engine/coolant temp and warning of a problem....

Be carefully som of them thermometers have a high limit to there readings
A repair to a bongo engine is a lot dearer than a engine temp alarm
I have a cheaper version to Hayden's excellent alarms
Eblay item 111052553849
Good bit of kit attaches to engine head quick temp read time
Cheaper than a engine rebuild
If / when you get one leave your coolant alarm on as well
(Never trust a mechanical safety feature to work)
Gas safe heating engineer / plumber if you need any advice just shout.

Ebay 111052553849
I and several other on here did a trial of these, I believe mine lasted the longest at 6 months then started to show 85 degrees no matter what temp the engine was at.
Remember whilst these are cheap they are designed to be mounted in a control panel on a machine so may not take the vibration of being fitted in a vehicle.
You pay your money and take your chances.
Personally the ones from Haydn are tried and tested with a massive amount sold world wide so for piece of mind I bought one of his.

If this is the product that you refer to, I would suggest that you contact the supplier and complain, as you do not believe that it is fit for purpose. I am more than confident that this company will give you and others a full refund. This Company does a vast array of products for some very important functions and I am certain that they will appreciate your comments.

I am in no way associated with this Company.

Good Luck. :)

I feel part of the issue is what appears to be the same item is supplied by several different vendors and no doubt built to different qualities / specs.
Mine was one of a batch I agreed to trial for a well known supplier, who with drew them due to reliablity issues I think, this was a few years ago so things may have changed.
I might re install it and see how it reads compared to the new one I have
