valve clearance top dead centre

Post by Furydav » Wed Jun 11, 2014 6:59 am

I want to adjust my valve clearance (2.5 TD engine) but not sure how to get the cylinders to TDC ? I've previous experience of petrol engines which was simply a case of removing the plugs , transmission in neutral and rotate each cylinder in turn using a socket on the end of the crankshaft. The 2.5 td with automatic transmission is a different beast though, any advice much appreciated.

You may need a large 38mm socket and long bar.

And remove the heater plugs for ease of turning the engine.

You should be able to tell by the position of the camshaft / crankshaft & valves. You can also remove an inspection cover to view the flywheel markings too. I don't have the exact details to hand but the engine manual covers the methods.
