Bongo Fury

I've had the same query twice this week from different Bongonauts, here's the second one:

"I recently purchased a 98 2.5td 4wd bongo. After about 500 miles my front diff overheated and was totally destroyed. I had a replacement fitted but my first journey over 20miles it overheated again and locked up.Thinking that I had bought a dud I fitted a 3rd but again my first journey over 15miles and it overheated and locked up. Both replacement diffs were checked and oil changed prior to fitting. Can you please help?"

I haven't answered this yet, but have spoken to Andy at AVA about similar issues in the past, and am I right in thinking that this is likely to be caused by wrong tyre sizes?

That's my first thought, but I would have thought damage more likely to the viscous coupling.

Tyre size would be the first thing to check. Easy and free to look and report back.

Different rolling radius tyres on front wheels? One worn, one new?

Tyres with different rolling circumferences are the most likely cause, while seized VC is another possibility. Keeping the tyre sizes balanced all round is such a widely discussed topic that you would hope that people would be more aware of the implications of getting it wrong.

Sound like they need to do another Torque test on the VC.

can anyone tell me where the vc is located and also is there a test to check the transfer box.

The VCU is inside the transfer box, you can carry out various Torque test to check the operation of the unit.

Rather than try to explain the procedure you can get plenty info from 4x4 Forum and utube, google etc.

PS, these procedures should always be carried out when there is a Diff wind up problem, other wise you will just be throwing money down the drain.

Thanks will just replace the transfer box complete.

try checking the oil in it or changing the oil, it may be a cheap fix. it its running hotter than normal it may lock earlier.

Done the vc test and its seized can you 1. replace the vc only 2. Replace transfer box only or 3. Do you have to replace the whole gear box Also if anyone could point me in the right direction for parts.

I think your easiest option is to source and replace the transfer box and VC assembly.

Definitely worth triple checking the rolling circumference of all four tyres before you try running with anything else replaced, if you haven't already.

Checked tyres and there was 4" of difference.I now have 4 new wheels and tyres on my problem now is sourcing a transfer box and vc assembly.
