Please can someone tell why this light occasionally comes on?

If its a steady light probably because you have operated the switch on the gear stick ?
However if its FLASHING then it indicates that the ECU for the gears has found a problem.

Interestingly....

I swapped fuses 1 and 8 to my Leisure battery. If the LB now gets completely discharged I get the hold light flashing. I need to check the wiring diagrams to try to understand why - but at least the fix is simple!

Yes the Top Left 10 Amp fuse handles demands for unswitched supplies which includes the backup to the ECU (which causes the hold light to flash), Radio, Door lock, AFT and many other low current circuits.

If your LB is getting completely discharged, then it's going to be knackered by now :(

I thought that was the point of an LB - "deep cycle"?

Many thanks for your replies. I think I must knock the button on the gear stick or there is a loose wire? The light came on last night during a short journey and stayed on. When I returned the light did not come on! As far as I am aware my leisure battery is fine. At least now I know what the light is for. Thanks again.

But during a journey surely you'd notice that you were no longer in top gear?

Modern LBs aren't deep cycle, they're more like heavy duty starter batteries and even have a cranking amps reading. A true deep cycle battery is very unlikely to be able to start a Bongo, as it's meant to release it's power slowly.

I admit, I haven't looked into it though need to as I want to change the setup I've got - but again, I thought that was the point, split charge relay, isolating circuits, etc... high cranking starter battery on the driver's side, deep-cycle slow-release leisure battery on the passenger's side - ie it's "ok" to run the LB down when parked up, but you'll only and always turn the engine over with the starter battery. I thought LB and deep-cycle were synonymous. (Waaaay off topic though, sorry).

Correct

Used to be like that, when you got proper deep cycle batteries
