hi,
please help! AkiraStan my Bongo has stopped charging his leisure battery, its got a Nagares rl180 12v 100a split charge relay fitted, after checking all the fuses i have changed the relay but it hasnt solved the problem.
any ideas what i should be checking for?
Thanks

Re: leisure battery not charging
Start by checking if the relay is actuating. Find the output of the relay - this will normally be a wire running to the leisure battery positive terminal. Disconnect this lead. Connect a voltmeter (or maybe a bulb if no voltmeter) to the realy on the terminal where the output lead was just disconnected from. With the engine not running the voltage should be zero. Then start the engine and if necessary give it some revs. The relay should now actuate giving you over 12volts (or the bulb will light). If this works OK it shows your split charge relay is working OK - so check the wiring from there to the leisure battery, check the leisure battery ground strap etc.
If the relay does not actuate, check that it is properly earthed.
If still no luck, check that the input lead to the relay is powered - this will be powered all the time (it's connected to the positive of the main battery either directly at the battery or at the alternator output terminal).
If that is OK you may have a dead relay. Not sure if your relay is an automatic voltage sensing one or if it is powered by the alternator light - so if none of the above work can you post some photos showing the setup and someone may be able to work out what you have.

Re: leisure battery not charging
Just looked up your relay and it does not seem to be an intelligent relay - so it will be switched by the alternator light wiring. So proceed as suggested above and if the input to the relay is OK (one of the screw terminals) but the output never goes to 12volts, check the 2 spade terminals. One should connect to ground and the other back to the charging/alternator light somehow

That's the same relay that was modified and sold by Willinton, so could be voltage sensing relay.
