Old Veggie oil mix

Post by munroman » Sat May 17, 2014 9:00 am

Hi, for various family reasons, my 2.5 TD Bongo has been laid up for years, I now want it back on the road but have hit a snag.

It wouldn't fire up, I changed the fuel filter, and I can get it to run by putting diesel and veggie oil into the pipe from the fuel filter.
The little strainer in the pump is clean and clear, so the issue seems to be between the tank and fuel filter.

I started to syphon the tank contents out last night, and the liquid is a dark red and viscous, so I think the veg oil/diesel mix in the tank has gone off.

I will continue to pump out what I can to empty the tank, once I do this, and get some more fuel filters, I plan to add straight diesel to the tank.

Has anyone found this issue before, and if so, what worked for you, eg did the fuel pipes have any deposits in them?

Thanks for all ideas and advice! :)

It would help if you blow back the suction line from the fuel filter back into the tank and then drain it also worth checking the filter/strainer in the tank.

Thanks, I didn't know that there was a filter/strainer in the tank, is it easy to get to as I cant run the Bongo up on ramps.

Your best bet is to remove the tank sender unit and give the tank etc a good clean out, the access lid is situated on the floor behind the drivers seat.

This is from a V6 but is much tha same apart from the pump. On the far right of the photo you can just make out the filter which is a fine plastic mesh.

Once you've got the sender out you'll be able to see what the condition is like inside the tank.

you could take the easy route and clean/refresh/debug your diesel.
