Colour change

Post by stuc » Mon May 05, 2014 10:01 pm

I'm fancying a colour change but not sure what. Trouble is loads of people like it as it is which puts me off doing it but I'm not keen on white, anybody got any ideas they want to share which might make it a bit different. I like Ford Ultimate green( http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/rs-green-paint) but some say it's a bit loud.

Throw some ideas in, I won't be offended, and don't you be if I say I don't like it.
Thinking of lowering it a little bit
If it stays white, matt black or gloss black bonnet maybe?
Lose the Aero badge?
Body kit matt or gloss black?

What do you mean lose the animal decal, when I want your opinion I'll ask for it!
Sorry, only joking, I did.
Just thought it was funny as that's what most other forums are like.
I love Ultimate green but it's a 3 stage pearl and it is such a big job if I am not happy with the results.
I also thought orange but any colour change is a major job.
I can do it myself on the other hand which won't cost me anything apart from time.

I am thinking {have been for ages though} about changing to a really Deep purple, mainly so as I can get a really deep shine cause with the Silver/Grey you can get a shine but not a really deep one. why not go out of this world and get a Rose pink lol, seriously the Green is awesome,

Hi Stuc

Following a conversation we had a while back I know you still like Black and you did a cracking job of your last one! Also I observed a Bronze one last month and it looked the business! Nissan did that one that changes colour so there's a few to be thinking of.

Best wishes

I will lie in wait and get you back for the wind up :D

Orange! Now you are talking. Less than a mile from our house there is a refurbished orange VW T2 that I have lusted after for the past year. Could you make it work as well on a Bongo?

Hi
What about colour interchange paints from House of Kolor....not cheap, but VERY nice....
I have my Bongo in gunmetal and chrome mixed metalflake, lower half with the top in red -blue holographic metalflake over Peugeot red metallic, and the centre section of the bodywork (the dipped piece along the length) sprayed over with gold marble over the metalflake, then overcoated with candy apple red laquer!....
I had planned another Bongo , sprayed in white with Abalone metalflake over (House of Kolor)....I've used that before....it's stunning, and looks like the inside of a pearl shell!
Cheers

I like painting all the chromaflair and flip colour paints but not sure if I would fancy it on my own car. My other option was white again but a 3 stage pearl white, then I dont have to paint all the insides and door shuts and it modernises it but keeps it sort of looking original.
Have you any photos of your's Helen?
Aye Mike, I saw a bronze coloured Discovery, down your way actually, and when the sun was on it, it had like a chrome type effect it was really nice, but I don't know what it was that was on it.
Painting the boot spoiler black today to see if it breaks the white up a bit, will put some pics on when done.

Hi Stuc
I have tried several times to photo the lower half, and it's not too startling when looking at a flat panel....BUT the bumpers sparkle nicely....Photographing metalflake is a 'mare, but I'll try to get the upper half done soon (photo-wise)...It REALLY looks wild in the sunlight. The gold marbling, however, is a bit subtle, as I've over-painted with candy tint laquer, using colour tinting additive rather than the candy lacquer (the tint is usually for door-shuts, as you know)....When looking from the side, the centre dip where the marbling is, looks just a shade darker red, but as you get closer, you see the marbling. I'll post some pictures when I can catch the right light!
I did have some other pictures of things painted in metalflake...I'll have to look them out...and I might have some of my Honda 4, which I put ribbon-scroll work on , and fish-scales....I have done some neat art on an old Type 2 which turned a few heads....wish I still had it!
Thinking back to your Bongo...if you don't want to have a lash at paint effects, have you thought of a nice electric blue metallic?....Bongos would look stunning in the right shade
OR...what about that green you like, painted with sign-writing in neon-green luminous paint, and lacquered with U-V resist "clearcote"....invisible during the day, but some wild writing glowing at night!
Cheers

Hi,

Have a look at a Bentley colour from way back in time called "Metallic Black Pearl"

Looks great, not too over the top and very distinctive. Code is BSB NF 8004

There is also a dark blue Jaguar metallic, going from memory the code is JHE.

Purely a personal opinion, but I think many of the fancier colours & finishes will look very dated in a few years time.

I'm going off the green rapidly, I was worried about it dating quickly. The oranges and greens seem quite in at the minute but probably wont last.
I like blues, I had a Mini painted in BMW Estoril blue which was nice.
It needs a bit more thought I think.
Trouble is it doesn't need painting, I'm doing it cos I can, so maybe wait until it actually needs it may be best and just do the bits I am not happy with white.
Helen, I would love to try something like that but maybe on a project first. My mate wants me to paint a Bongo for him so I might experiment on that one first.

Hi Stuc
What about House of Kolor PC3 Prism Green pearl....it would use your white as a base coat, and flash it over with Prism Green Pearl lacquer, and in some lights it would flash up a VERY pale green tint...or there's a nice violet in the same range....BUT, the colour chips I have are showing the green as a good choice, as it's virtually the whitest.
IF....and only IF you like it like that, then you could still blow a few coats of Abalone Flake (the smallest), and it's STILL white, but with that green flake catching the sunlight and making it look like an oyster shell...it's horrendously gorgeous, still shows white (which your Bongo looks good in, and there's no need to "do" the door shuts and underbonnet etc.)
Metalflake doesn't ever go out of "fashion" if it's a good paint job on an unusual classic like a Bongo....I may even "add" to mine by doing a "Lace" spray-job over the bottom bit of the grey.....I "lace-sprayed" one car with astronomically pleasing results!...the trick with a good Lace Job is start with a good base-coat, blow some flake on, and lace-spray the same colour base over the flake, so that in many lights , it looks quite sane , but when you get full sun, it's the wildest thing you'll see!....the paint looks like it's LIVING!
Cheers

That sounds great, pity you weren't closer I could talk for hours on this stuff. I will look at House of Kolor website for some ideas.
