ecu and welding

Post by Paulinwales » Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:06 am

Planning on doing a bit of weld repair on underside near exhaust (So well away from battery) where is the ecu located and how best to isolate it incase of harm?

Ps I have read around and some recommend disconecting battery and others suggest keeping it on as it absorbs any spikes any opinions. I have leisure battery also .
Thanks in advance Paul

I always disconnect the earth as the battery is 12v welders can be different voltages but many are 50-80V.

Personally I would disconnect both the battery and the PCM, it is situated behind the glove box.

PCM =Powertrain Control Module, some peeps call it ECU.

I would personally disconnect all the batteries, it might sound a bit OTT but I would also unplug the Alternator.

The earth leads must be disconnected from both batteries or the welding current will flow to them. Big risk of them exploding.

As mentioned above, there isn't a ECU as such on earlier diesel Bongos but the control box(es) for transmission etc are under the dashboard:

May also be worth disconnecting the airbag controller too (if fitted).
