STARTS EASILY THEN AFTER 30 SECS RUNS ROUGH UNTIL I REV IT

Post by PeteH » Tue Nov 19, 2013 3:33 pm

My diesel engine always starts easily but then runs rough after about 30 seconds until I rev it a few times then everything is OK.
It was suggested that there might be an air leak somewhere in the fuel system so that when the fuel in the injector pipes is used up the pump sends fuel with air bubbles. Revving up clears the air in the fuel.
Well that's the theory but I can't see anything wrong.
I replaced the fuel filter just in case but nothing changed.
Anyone got any ideas where to look
Cheers

one of the cold start solenoids has failed or the pipe to it has come off.

the first cold start (from zero to about plus 10 deg C is working fine. then at about 10 deg (coolant temp in the head) this turns off and the second one cuts in from plus 10 deg to about plus 50 deg c, then its warmed up so turns off.

the easy way to test this is to start the engine, get it up to temp then turn ON the aircon, if the revs drops slightly with the extra load of the compressor its the second solenoid.

item Y in the link below. you can test it by removing the wires and putting 12 volts to it and an earth.
if its not clicking remove and fill with wd 40 or similar and give it a tap to free it off.
watch the nozzles and pipes to it they are heat aged and very brittle.

Thanks for the information.
I have checked the 2 solenoids and the front one with the white dot is not working.
I can't unstick it - checked the winding resistance and it's open circuit so I guess it's a gonner.
I am now trying to find a replacement.
It has part number K5T49091 KL01 and 7122 stamped on the underside.
I can see a few on ebay but all have different last numbers. I am assuming that's a date code.
Anyway will try to get a S/H one from a Bongo Breaker tomorrow.
Once I get one and fit it and fingers crossed it solves the problem I will post it on this thread.
Thanks again for your help.

Cheers

the 2 are interchangeable so as a short term measure you can swap them. until you can get one.

Thanks for the info.
Do you know if the last set of numbers are important?
K5t49091 and KL01 seem to come up in the ads but not the last numbers which on mine are 7122

not sure on the numbers sorry, i just check/look at the way the valve is ported, there are a few different ways they work and some have a different outlet layout. one other thing worth noting is that the black block is an air filter, this can be removed and swapped to a different port making the valve work in a different way.
the 2 valves to the rear of these when on the bongo are for the egr system and are not the same so are interchangeable with the cold start valves.

The valves are a switch through type, in that they allow vacuum to run in one direction then apply power and they switch it to the other output, as Ady says the cap is just a blank, a lot of maunfacturers use them for various functions. The valave all operate in the same way so are all interchangable, the only difference is the electrical connector, which is different shapes but theyre all the 12v solenoid

Well the replacement part arrived and is now fitted.
Things are a bit different but still not right.
It idles better from cold for longer the goes rough as before.
I clear it by reving the engine a few times then it runs ok as normal.

All help appreciated
Cheers

Hi Northern Bongolow
I think your message failed or I don't understand what "pm sent" means.
Any idea on how to fix my running problem?
Cheers

I now know that "pm" means private message but when I follow the email link to the private message it says it cannot be found.
So no further forward.
Happy days

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem one of the cold start solenoids had gone open circuit got a replacement made a slight improvement but still spluttering especially in the colder weather ended up checking the banjo filter in the fuel pump and found it was probably 50% blocked up cleaned it out and touch wood its been fine ever since.

Hi Northern Bongolow
I checked my messages - top left next to the log in/out and there are no messages. So it must have got lost.
If you could resend I would appreciate it
Thanks

Thanks for your input.
I will try to find that banjo and clean out the filter.

Cheers to you both
