Vibrations

Evening all

The bongo (diesel auto) has developed a bit of a vibration at idle and low speeds.

The FAQ talks about it potentially being the crank pulley, but I'm wondering if knackered engine mount(s) could give the same symptom?

Untraceable loose trim in the back rattles horrendously at certain resonance as well! Does my head in!

usually prop shaft or centre prop bearing. is it 2 wheel d or 4 wheel drive.
the crank pulley usually makes a rattling sound. lift the passy seat, does it make a noise when stood still,
or vibrate when the bongo is moving (prop etc).

2 wheel drive and will vibrate in N with handbrake on. Worse in D at Idle.

Sorry to hijack. My 2wd V6 has an odd shake when warm at idle, Rev counter showing 600-800. Very irregular. Do you think think that could be the propshaft or prop bearing?

Is the vehicle stationary at the time? If so, you can rule out prop shaft etc. more likely to be ignition problem. Check the HT leads carefully, especially at the bottom where the rubber shroud goes over the top of the plug. You're looking for oil, water or signs that the rubber is breaking down.

Thanks Simon. Yes, it is when stationary but it can be a bit jerky when accelerating. Could this also be down to bad HT leads?

Yes, HT leads can start to break down a bit when they get old. If one of the rocker cover gaskets starts to leak, you also get oil in the spark plug wells which does not help. Personally, I'd remove, check and clean each lead in turn. You may not be able to see anything obvious, but what you could try is running the engine in the dark an looking for any signs of any 'tracking'. It wont hurt to check and clean the plugs too as you can learn a lot about the state of the engine by the colour and condition of them.

Not entirely sure - lowish though. Very slight rev cures the worst of it
