Willinton charger playing up!

Post by Gixermark » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:29 pm

Hi all

Wondered if anyone has experienced the following with their Willinton split charger :

Purchased Feb 2013, duly fitted the same day, had no problems ....until this evening! Mending a bulb on my driveway lights I heard the usual sound of the solenoid clicking. Not unusual I hear you say and I agree, however, the clicking continued and just keeps clicking. I must add I have my Bongo continuously plugged to the mains and the battery permanently on charge to allow us to 'flee' the rat-race at a moments notice. Some may say this is not the way to do it, not sure.

I am sure the solenoid will click until the leisure battery is fully charged, checked the battery and it appears all ok. It was a brand new 100 amp purchased in February as well. Green light is coming on when the solenoid clicks.

Any ideas anyone ....hot weather perhaps? Just seems strange it has suddenly started when it has, I believe, been working fine!

Thanks in advance
Mark

Hello mark,I just wondered why it is plugged in all the time.I also have the Willington kit fitted. My bongo stands for up to three weeks without moving, but starts first time and all the things running off the leisure battery work ok.I just can't see why you need to be drawing of the mains all the time, but then someone will come along and tell me why.I know I do not have to.Cheers Michael

Made sure when I purchased it, Martin confirmed it is ok to leave plugged in to mains as it only comes into use when needed ie when the battery drops below a given spec.

Currently removing ( after work this evening!) to send back to Martin at his request as he thinks there may be a fault / may need tweeking.

Now there's great service for ya!

Keep you updated

Ditto - I cannot see any need to leave it plugged in all the time either.
I hire out motorhomes and they are only ever plugged in the night before they are due to go out to ensure the leisure batteries are working and fully charged.

I certainly wouldn't leave them hooked up 24/7.

Point taken! We always used to leave our caravans / motorhomes plugged in. Im not using the onboard Zig but a seperate purpose made charger designed to be left on all the time.
As mentioned, Martin was clear to me when he said leaving on will NOT effect the willinton split charger ....that said, I will bow to your advice and just turn on every so many weeks or so for a few hours.

ive seen 2 willintons fail on the relay switching, and to be fair were swapped without hassle, considering the numbers fitted that is still good going.

I would imagine your charger gets the SB to full - 13.8v - which triggers the Willinton relay to come on...

Then the SB battery drops a chunk as the LB draws from it, triggering the willinton to now turn off.

Now the charger gets the SB back to 13.8v almost immediately and the willinton turns back on again.

repeat for hours and hours until the LB matches the SB. Then the willinton relay stays on as they are both sat at 13.8v
