Auto Disco Top

Got a 5m strip of multi-coloured remote-controlled LEDs off eBay, which are exactly the same depth as the aluminium tent-frame-thing and fill both sides and the top end. Wired in through the hole which feeds the existing upstairs light and Bob's your uncle! The child loves them.

They're drawing more power than the fridge when you turn them up full, but very little when turned down low.

Not bad for £20.

Looks great. You might want to limit the use of the red light though - might attract the wrong sort of visitors...

Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light...? You're right there - hadn't thought of that!

This is the kit I got:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350628315601?var=620069246897

But there are loads out there, including one with a more complex / programmable remote control. Go for the 5050 ones, which tend to be brighter I think.

It was all good for 24 hours but now there seems like a dodgy connection in the IR controller box. I've emailed the seller and I'll have a proper check in the morning. Up until they give up they went down very well with the daughter

Fantastic! So glad you posed this up. I've just ordered a set to keep the boys entertained, it'd be rude not to :-)

Did you just stick them to the front of the aluminium tent extrusion? And can you direct me to the hole that feeds the upstairs light? I had a quick look but I couldn't see where the wires come in.

TIA

I did - well, the inside edge. It's almost exactly the same depth as the width of the self-adhesive strip. At the top / front of the AFT, I stuck it to the plastic strip up there which doesn't line up with the aluminium, so you end up with a slightly awkward corner, but it sticks well. I've been in all weathers with the top up and down countless times and it hasn't come unstuck yet!

At the rear, hinged end of the AFT, there's a small bunch of wires which pops up through the metal floor (beyond the end of the hinged floor with the trapdoor in it) and feed the original light in the centre of the roof.

My solar charger/controller is in the wardrobe at the back of the van, so I took a feed off that (which has the added benefit of allowing me to turn them off from below), made a new hole through the ceiling fabric directly below the bunch of wires above and fed my new wires through the existing hole in the metal roof. However, it should be easy enough to take a feed off the power to the original light.

Let me know if you want to see some pics of the detail and I'll get my camera out!
