Please help a simpleton on a tracking issue
I know this question has been raised and apparently answered before.......
I took the details from the fact sheet on here and from a previously asked question on tracking in to a national tyres garage and also my local tyres and exhaust world .
In both garages they said the numbers didn't make sense ! Now I know nothing about tracking so can not offer any advice to them on it .
I have a '96 4wd ,with a imperial cars (Poole) moon fleet conversion . The kitchen unit is where the middle row of seats would be. I haven't long bought new tyres - continental van 2 £90 each , and on the passenger side there is wear on the outside edge and on the drivers side the wear is on the inner side . Both tyres are less than 3 months old (no more than about 500 miles) .
I thought I would just present the info and a van to a garage ,hand over the money and drive away .
Why is it so complicated ?
Finally I'm off to Chatham in Kent today from Weymouth (more wear on tyres) , so perhaps there is a place that specialises in bongos somewhere in the northern part of Kent ? I'm there for the week and want to get this sorted before I return home next weekend .
Any advice will be greatly appreciated .
Thank you . Greg

Try and find a garage that uses Optical Gauges the setting is 1~7mm Toe In,you also need to get the steering and suspension checked first (the garage will know this)

Re: Please help a simpleton on a tracking issue
as its a 4wd it essential that the tyres ---sizes---wear limit etc are correct.
if your new tyres are on the front, and the rears are the correct size but are well worn this will mean that the fronts are revolving slower than the rears, this makes them skip because the diffs cannot compensate.
4wd are best with all the same size on all 4. or as per spec on the door plate. BUT all are best with the same tread depth so the rolling radius is the same on all wheels.

That is very informative, can you explain why these 4wd vehicles use a Viscous Coupling in the transfer box.

Re: Please help a simpleton on a tracking issue
they are bias towards the rear wheel drive as you know, but if you put larger fronts on this screws em.

Thank you for this info . The new tyres are on the front and the rear tyres are also well worn .Northern Bongolow wrote:as its a 4wd it essential that the tyres ---sizes---wear limit etc are correct.

The tyres are to spec as per the door plate - I think 195's on front and 215's on the rear . Perhaps I should get the rear tyres replaced ASAP then first .
I'll also see about getting 4 same sized tyres in future to save this hassle .
Now the garage questioned this 1-7mm toe in figure saying it was a huge margin ? I thought I read somewhere it was -1 to 7mm toe in ? Shall I tell them to set it to '0' as someone else said on the forum ?

Thanks for taking the time to help me out here . I'm going to see about new rear tyres and getting suspension, steering checked . Both places I've taken my van to they've looked at the tracking details blankly and say 1-7 mm doesn't sound right .teenmal wrote:Try and find a garage that uses Optical Gauges the setting is 1~7mm Toe In,you also need to get the steering and suspension checked first (the garage will know this)
