96ish 2WD 2.5TD - Narrowing seats and Moving Seat Rails

Post by DRob » Sun May 19, 2013 12:34 pm

Hi All,

I recently saw a side conversion where it seemed that the original center seats had been kept, but narrowed to 2 rather than 3 seats.

I was wondering if this is a regular mod and is therefore pretty easy or if something special had occurred with this particular bongo.

I am thinking of designing my own side-ish conversion but want to maintain 5 person (inc me) carrying capacity so I can carry on providing a bus service to those accompanying me when we go camping. Most of my camping buddies have not discovered the joys of camper vans and are still playing in tents which is handy as it helps with the fuel bill!

My thoughts were to keep the center seats albeit with only 2 rather than 3 spaces, then keep one of the 2 folding seats at the back giving me a 2 + 2 + 1 capacity but keeping a fair proportion of the versatility thanks to the folding and sliding seats.

Thanks for any help,

Dom

I have just such a conversion as you describe with narrowed seats on re-positioned rails. This is a bit of specialist job as far as I know, since the rear bench seats need to be dismantled, cut down and then re-assembled, as well as re-positioning the running rail on the side conversion side of the van. Mine was provided by a well known importer near Worcester. It does work well for the purpose you suggest.
Live Bongo and prosper.

A number of converters such as AVA do this modification, as have a couple of owners. Have a look through the Converting into Campervans section for some more ideas on this.
