Oops! I've broken my fog light switch.. (wiring help?)

Post by sdsk » Thu May 09, 2013 8:26 am

Hi,

Short tale of stupidity..
I was starting to wire in a switch to completely turn off my battery draining radio when I accidentally shorted out a fog light indicator bulb.
This blew a fuse somewhere.... wasn't obvious in the fuse box, so I try to prise the front fog light switch from the dash.
The top of the fog light switch came off instead.

Whilst this sort of goes back together, it no longer seems to act as a switch - have you seen the inside of these things? Intricate piece of work!

Eventually found the tail light fuse had blown.....

So I'm left with a broken front fog switch like this:

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement? They seem rather scarce.

Failing this, I could put in a generic switch, but I'm struggling with the wiring diagram:

I've got one red, one black and a pair of red & black wires from the switch. Is the switch E2-01 in the diagram? and is it a simple DPST switch?

Any suggestions???

Thanks

Darron (who currently feels like a right berk!)

If you find a replacement then there should be 4 connectors on it, 1 pair are the switch the other pair is the lamp.
The switch uses a Red wire and a Red/black wire as shown on the diagram you linked to.
The lamp uses a Black and Red/Black as on this diagram E2-01 is the lamp second from left;

Thanks Geoff,

So, if I was to draw the whole circuit out, would it look like this?

I really struggle with vehicle wiring diagrams!

Thanks again.

Ah I think I see the problem, in the original wiring it is an ILLUMINATION light not an indicator light, so it lights up when you put on the side lights.
The light doesn't light up when you operate the switch (indicator), the switch is just a single make contact to operate the relay.
Now the wiring might have been modified in some way to change it into an indicator lamp, if so then you can only trace the wiring.

That makes some sense and explains why the tail light fuse blew when I shorted out the indicator light.
The indicator light is definitely a modification.

If I can't source an original replacement, I'll need to wire something in to turn on the fogs lights.
So can I assume connecting the Red to the Red/Black through the switch would do just that?

Thanks again...

Yes that's right the two Red/Black's are the power feed from the Tail-Number-Side lights supply, the Red is to the relay coil.
No reason why you couldn't wire the Illum. light from Red to Black then it will operate as an Indicator light rather than an Illumination light, so provided you know where/can see it in the dark then that might do the job ?

Excellent! It all makes sense now.
I just need to source a switch...

Thanks once again!

Try Ian at the club shop. I've a feeling that's where I got mine last year. Give him a ring, if he can't get one he'll know where one can be found I'm sure.
