Leak from Inlet manifold / EGR

Post by Jimbob1979 » Thu Apr 25, 2013 1:33 pm

Hi,

I have what looks like oil leaking from my inlet manifold. I though it was from the rocker cover which i have replaced but it is still appearing and on further inspection it appears to be originating from the inlet manifold on the bottom bolt closest to the coolant pipe. Does anyone know if it is possible for oil to come from here and also where to get the two gaskets that connect the Inlet manifold to the air intake and air intake to egr pipe. I have bought a new inlet manifold gasket but i would prefer replace the whole lot to ensure there are no leaks.

Thanks

Hi
It sounds like the leak you have is from the EGR pipe itself...pretty much most Bongos seem to have it in some degree. Blank off the EGR pipe both ends with a kit from Allans Vehicle Services (advertised on here), and it'll disappear....Use a bit of sealant when assembling.

Thanks,

Could this get to the point where oil could actually drip from the bottom on the engine? When i park up after a journey i may get a drip of two on the drive. It comes from the small rubber bung under the flywheel but i guess it is travelling along the head from the source of the leak?

Hi
My engine, like quite a few, was pretty dirty. Oil stains (or what looked like oil) were all down the side...partly blowing from the EGR, and a bit of fuel leakage from the fuel pump seals...also common. Oil dripping from the back of the engine usually comes from the rocker gasket...if you have replaced yours, are you sure that you replaced all the little inserts and seals correctly?....if so, it may just need a bit of "nipping up"....Another source of "oil" is a steering rack leak blowing along the bottom of the engine.
Don't forget, they are old vehicles, which may have leaked from gaskets of no great worry (e.g. rocker-box), and collected grime along the way, and stuck to the sides and bottom of the engine....so, any subsequent leak from elsewhere, may gather a bit of the oily grime and appear like an oil leak. So...fuel or steering fluid may appear like oil...also, the EGR blow-out appears like oil, but the acid test is the dipstick...if there's minimal loss , then you are probably not seeing oil drips

Hi Jimbob, this is a classic sign that the inlet manifold needs to be degunged, this is part of the maintenance requirements with EGR fitted engines. Its probably been a Long time since it was last done (If Ever)

Your engine will run more efficiently after this work has been done.

PS its not advisable to leave the gunge in there for various reasons.
Take care..

Hi
If you're cleaning out old oil, use petrol or paraffin...and air-dry before assembly
