Bongo Fury

Is there one?

I am trying to get an idea of the mpg so want to run the tank as low as I can. In my cars I rely on the warning light and know I have ~50 miles to find some fuel. But this comes on when I am well into the red zone.

On the bongo I have just started touching the white block, but dont know if this is a 'think about getting some fuel' level or 'woah there, stop at the next garage boyo' event!

Any thoughts?

fill it up

drive a few hundred miles

fill it up again

Or carry a can can of fuel just incase

Why play chicken.....just fill it when it gets to a quarter......not a good idea to run it to low as you will start getting crud through the pipes

I have always run my vehicles low to keep the crud out of the system.

Always running it low means the crud is being dragged through in small chunks, and the fuel filter should be able to manage it... I hope.

If you are forced to run low for some reason and there is a load of crud in the bottom that is suddenly dragged through in one big lump it can cause issues.

Does rely on cleaning or at least inspecting the filter though.

Just signed up to Fuelly, apparently my first tank brought 28.3 MPG. Gonna have to try and improve that I think.

Dont forget the banjo filter, if that blocks then you will have fuel starvation.

Personaly I don't let the gauge go under 1/4. Twice in the last month we've been scrambled to family members in, or needing to get to hospital. Not the time to be thinking which garage is open.

Also gives you some slack if the queues are bad, no power, banking system down...

Fuel warning lights were fitted from 98 on, my light comes on when fuel gauge needle is below white marker. Ihave done 25 miles after light came full on but don't know how much further it could go.
