Bongo elevating roof for sale on e-bay.

Post by peterrc » Tue Feb 12, 2013 1:09 pm

If anyone with a tintop is looking for an elevating roof there is one on e-bay. It is local to me so I would be happy to check it out if anyone is interested. They do say "will wrap if want to send courier or email with post code for price".

Almost worth it for the motors and microswitches alone. And you get a free family-sized sledge, too! :D

I cannot believe someone thinks "done" is spelt "dune"....

......." van we dune a high roof conversion on "

Saying that, I saw a stainless steel "ecsorst" system for sale on GumTree once.

I did a lot of research as to whether fitting an AFT to tintop is actually possible. Here is the answer I got from Vince at VGS Imports (about a year ago):

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Sorry we can't offer a fitting service.
The roof profile and roof skin are different on a freetop and tin top, therefore these would need to be replaced from the donor vehicle, bodyshells didn't change with age, so the age of your vehicle is irrelevant, therefore in theory a conversion is possible although complex.
Hope this helps,
Best regards,
Vince.

Fit an AFT to a tintop!?! Mad mad idea, it would only lead to tears. Also, much as I love my AFT, they are a liability as they get older I think. Mine is now sorted (i hope!) with 2 brand new motors, at a cost of over 400 quid (which I was happy to spend on my otherwise utterly reliable beloved).

Its do able but what a big job with lots of potential to go wrong.
Its a pity Dormobile dont do one, they are much easier to fit

Also contacted Dormobile a while ago. Here is the response:

Hi Steve
Don't know if we could fit to a Bongo. It maybe possible but would need width and length of roof to start with
Regards
Jim Bullock

I sent diagrams and specific dimensions but didn't hear anything back

Hes a top bloke he was very helpful when I repaired the roof on my 1973 Bedford.
I suspect he is busy, they are only a small outfit now, they make a few new roofs, but I suspect he would need a good few on order to make it a viable project.

It would be a great market opening for Dormobile. From what I have seen of AFT roofs, they aren't all that great. Dormobile's side opening looks to be much better. I'd consider being the guinea pig Bongo for it but like you say, he's probably too busy or it's too much of a risk.
