Bongo Fury

My regular Bongo garage has changed the seals on my diesel pump, and subsequently there is no real power under any sort of load, eg hills, open road acceleration.

Bongo struggles to reach 60mph on the open road. She seems to rev freely enough, starts fine, smooth tickover, but has lost 50% of actual 'go'.

He's done this job before, and is very 'Bongo-savvy', but admits to being stumped. Currently waiting for a replacement pump, but in the meantime can anyone suggest what may have gone adrift?

Is the little vacuum tube that goes from a nipple on the inlet manifold elbow to the top of the fuel pump connected?

Hi Derek,did the mechanic remove the pump?,why are you needing a replacement pump.

If its been removed or disturbed then the pump may need to be re-timed.

I assume the pump was removed so that new seals could be fitted.

The seals were replaced because Bongo was very smokey (embarrassingly so) on cold start ups, but fine when warmed up. The diagnosis was that the pump seals were leaking diesel when cold, resulting in aforementioned smoke: as engine/pump warmed up, the old seals would have expanded and the leak would stop.

As far as I know, nothing else was done to the pump, just the fitting of the new seals..

A wild guess from experience & could be totally wrong but worth a check for an easy fix....???

The big bore pipe coming up from the inter-cooler to the elbow on the front top of the engine may have dropped/come loose?? Not easy to see if it has dropped slightly..?!!

agree with jaylee, could be the charge inlet pipe slipped, but you can normally hear the air escaping when on boost?

The fuel pump timing is set with a woodruff key so it cant be set outside its working parameters, theres only a small degree of adjustment to allow for fine tuning, having said that i have seen a fuel pump that was fitted incorrectly, the garage assumed the key was located and bolted it all up, the bottom pulley was hower pushed forward and didnt run straight so it damaged the cambelt!

Take it back to the garage, sure they wont have a problem with looking it over.

As an update.

Replacement pump fitted from breaker: that proved faulty as well, so my guy is off to S London to pick up another one.

He asked a local firm for a quote to rebuild the original..

Could changing the mechanic be cheaper?

Which mechanic? My regular guy has been good as gold over the past year, done lots of good work at very fair prices.

It's the rebuild quote that has stunned us.

He wasn't pushing for the £1000 rebuild, quite the contrary, he said it was ludicrous, not an option, and as we speak he is driving up to London to find a breaker part that works.

Apparently pumps left on the shelf can dry out/seize up as there is no diesel in them to keep them lubricated, so he's going up there to take one directly off a broken bongo..

Search the Forum for pump rebuild, there's been a few posts, from memory, on rebuilt pumps...for a lot less than a bag o' sand!

It just looked as if he might be getting a bit out of his depth here - if you had the oomph before he changed the seals, it has to be something he has or hasn't done that has lost it and whatever it is seems to have stumped him.

The fact that a different pump is exactly the same indicates (to me) that there is some common factor involved and a second opinion might reveal what he could possibly be missing.
