power loss poor fuel consumption black smoke

Post by toadman » Sun Dec 23, 2012 3:40 pm

Hello Peeps. I seem to have a problem with our new purchase. We have not had the bongo long so have not noticed this till we went on a long run. I filled the tank £80 and only got 159 miles 14 gallon tank that equates to 11.35 miles to the gallon  We also have a big power loss until the rev counter hits 3500 rpm and then takes off like a scalded cat. I'm thinking that I have a problem with the turbo actuator or waste gate? Driving normally and accelerating below 3500 rpm when the turbo seems to kick in there is an awful lot of black smoke to the point where it is staining the rear bumper and tailgate.
Any ideas??
Thanks in advance

Hi toadman,it would be worthwhile checking the turbo for oil seal/bearing failure.

Did you fill the tank back up to the top to confirm the 14 gallon fuel consumption? The gauge is not especially accurate, so often reads lower that the actual amount in the tank. Check all the pipes around the turbo are in good condition and done up tightly.

also check the the little pipe that goes from the air inlet elbow(front drivers side) to the fuel pump head, this can snap off or become blocked with oil and bung up the top of the pump.

when the engine is warmed up and ticking over is the end of the throttle cable pushing in the little solenoid switch on the fuel pump.
