Overheating, Fan not switching off

Can anyone help. I think it must be the extreme heat but my Bongo was panting yesterday. I left it exposed in the intensity of the mid day sun for a few hours, came back and started engine to get AC working so that I could read the map. Switched it off a few mins later and what sounded like a loud beating fan kept on going. Was this the fan? It was really loud and there was a smell of burning rubber I think. Anyway I turned the ignition key and re-started the engine as I didn't know how to stop this. Once on the road I stopped and turned off the engine. It did same again and then finally stopped abruptly. Re-started the engine and carried on and it didn't happen again and seems fine now. Presumably the engine was too hot and this was the fan? Any ideas?

Was it the scavenger fan that cools the driver cockpit, with all the heat, that is probably the answer. If the engine had overheated, you would have had a horrible bubbling sound from the passenger side - under the bonnet, the rubbery smell, not sure what that was, just check all your belts and hoses, hope all is well

you may have a belt on it's way out, especially with the burning rubber smell, my fan makes a hell of a noise sometimes depending on the weather conditions, it feels like the whole van is shaking when i have the air con on 18 degrees, puts a little strain on the engine too i gather !

Best check your belts for sign of wear, check your hoses too, my top hose went the other week.

hi.there are actually two fans in the front,you have the main one which cools the radiator,and then you have a secound fan which is more underneath sat in front of a small radiator(which i assume is the air conditioning)the small one sometimes comes on a few minutes after you shut the engine off,when you have been running the air conditioning for a long time and it usually turns off a 2/3 minutes later.i have done checks while the fan is running and there is no sign of overheating,i believe that it is normal for this to happen in this hot weather.it obviously cools something down.it has only happened twice to mine in the hot weather and both times there has been no smell or noise(except the noise of the fan).paul

Thanks, it was the noise that was so disconcerting. If it was the fan it was really loud, the whole van was vibrating. Should that be the case?

have you tried to tighten the screws/bolts, they may have worked themselfs loose?, hence the noise
