Newbie Owner - Hold light problem?

Post by BoroBongo » Mon Nov 19, 2012 5:43 pm

Hello all, thanks for the welcoming posts etc. Going to the lakes later this week for a couple of nights.
Took the van out yesterday for a warm up run and the Hold light came on, the engine lost power and I had to coast to a stop on the hard shoulder which is a bit unnerving when you're bombing down the outside lane of the A19 !!
I've read up extensively on here about the Hold light but there doesn't seem to be a definitive reason for it coming on sporadically.
I tried pressing the button on the gear shift without any apparent effect.
The engine wouldn't start for about ten minutes and I then I continued my journey to Thirsk and back to Boro without any problem.
It's a 1996 2.5 Auto and the gear changing seems Ok.
I had the van serviced when I bought it in September so any advice would be much appreciated.Should I be concerned, take further action etc?
Cheers.

I think you should get it looked at. Check level and condition of ATF. Things like TPS (throttle position sensor) and gearbox solenoid pack have I think come up as possible issues. And there is a factsheet I think on how to interpret sequences of hold light flashing (i.e. error codes).

Ps - the power loss makes me wonder about the TPS but being honest, i'm no techie, so let's wait and see what they have to say.

Hi BoroBongo

Did you get a resolution. I am also new to Bongos. Took mine out yesterday and experienced a similar problem. My speedo is not working and the HOLD light is intermittent flashing. No problems with driving yet. I have downloaded the factsheet but I am no mechanic so my Bongo is in my local Bongo friendly garage to look at.

Any advice would be appreciated.

That sounds like a faulty Speedo chip to convert from Km/Hr to MpH. They are mounted behind the display;

If the chip goes faulty or gets disconnected then the Speedo stops displaying and the pulses from the Speedo to the ECU means that the ECU flags up a problem and flashes the HOLD light. Check to see if you have one and that its connected, another possibility is the actual sensor, but more common is the chip itself.

I recognise that photo ;). The wires on the left go to the low coolant alarm that I powered from the rear of the instrument panel.
