Diagnosis Please Power loss

Hi Guys

I need a little information and/or educated guesses?

Travelling home from Inverness today the Bongy started to loose power on acceleration it was as if a parachute had been deployed when I put my foot down. Ran it for a while and it was a bit lumpy but it came and went for a while. Around Edinburgh (A1) I stopped and rested it for 10 minutes and set off again. It ran well but all started again after another 10 minutes. Made it back to Newcastle in the end some 2 hours late..

When I am at idle I can rev it up and it has bags of power and no misfires, starts and stops OK and revs like a good'n. I am thinking Turbo, Lift pump, fuel lines leak...

I made it home but could only do between 31-44 mph and managed to p*ss off a lot of anxious drivers along the way especially the HGV kind.

I have travelled up and down to Orkney islands for about 3 months with not a bit of bother so I know it must be something simple but what? thats the issue!

There may be other causes, but it sounds to me like it might be fuel.

Try removing the fuel cap, see if that makes a difference it. I've read that caps have a breather hole and there is also a breather hose near the filler cap that can get blocked.

It might otherwise be a sign that fuel filter and "banjo" filter in the fuel pump itself need serviced. Easy enough, though it may well seem to take AGES to start afterwards, so make sure battery is in nick or that you have a charger to hand.

Finally, was it running lumpy just when starting from cold, or was that some time after it was warmed? I don't know if fuel starvation can make it run lumpy, but that might be a sign of glowplugs on their way out.

Just some ideas for you to think about/investigate.

I had alreadt travelled 150 miles before the problem started. I removed the filler cap and tried again because that was an obvious one to me. It does need new glow plugs because its lumpy on start up on one cylinder but aftet all those miles the glow plugs would not be on anyway? Tomorrow I will have the fuel filter stripped and cleaned as well as a new air filter.

When I said lumpy I may not have described it correctly but its just a loss of power above 40 MPH? Idles ok, stops starts ok revs ok but acts up under load.

what year is it please.??.
try this. find the filter housing under the drivers seat, approx 8 inches to the rear is a pipe which terminates in a mushroom filter valve, its clipped end on to the inside of the chassis rail, its the tank breather, pull it towards the gearbox it clips off, make sure the valve/breather is clear. failing that its as matt says the pump/pipes/filters/housing or the seals on the pump. there are a few poor quality fuel filter around !!.

edit after you replied above.
check the little pipe from the inlet manifold to the pumptop.

Thanks again, I will give it all a go tomorrow. Its a 98 on an 'S' I believe but it had a private plate when I bought it.

this years turbo is a bit temperamental, (the newer one) any dash lights on when the power goes down.??

Could the throttle position sensor cause this?

yes mike, when it acts up it affects the turbo, but this is usually accompanied by the dash light.

Well not last night but an amber light flashed failntly last week on the right hand side of the binnacle only for a half second and did not come full on...lilke a flicker. Had no idea what that was but it never came back anyway so forgot about it thinking if it is serious it will show up later.

As for yesterday no abnormal lights on dash., I wish it had then I may have had an idea what it was. Anyway it got me home - 112 miles with a struggle. As I say it starts runs, idles and revs full up with no splutter or misfires, only when under load it seems to act up and give power loss.

The first thing you need to do is,change/clean fuel and possibly the air filters.

try this. find the filter housing under the drivers seat, approx 8 inches to the rear is a pipe which terminates in a mushroom filter valve, its clipped end on to the inside of the chassis rail, its the tank breather, pull it towards the gearbox it clips off, make sure the valve/breather is clear. failing that its as matt says the pump/pipes/filters/housing or the seals on the pump. there are a few poor quality fuel filter around !!.

Hi,I always thought that pipe was the Gear Box Breather not the fuel tank breather.

Guys

Just spoke to my local mechanic who said he has had Bongo's and Toyota Previa'a He said they are all the same and is currently looking first at the inline fuel filter. He went straight to it as he has had this experience before. I am waiting for the diagnosis but agree that fuel and all filters are the first place to look.

UPDATE!

Ok guys it was the fuel filter full of crap. no inline filter on this one incidentaly. One new filter and a new tank of fuel seems to have done the trick. I will run around with it all weekend just to make sure before heading off to the Highlands again and back to work.

Hi,I always thought that pipe was the Gear Box Breather not the fuel tank breather.

it clips to the chassis inside face but it is very near to this g/box breather, the box breather is just an open ended one, but the fuel tank breather has a vent valve in it to vent the vapours into the chassis rail itself, . just pull it it clips to the chassis.
