Water pump

Post by Jd17 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 10:44 pm

Hi guys , I'm new to this site, I've had my bongo for about 5 months now with no trouble at all. My wife to be drives it, along with the 3 kids and they love it ! Any way, I drove the bongo on Sunday and noticed the cooling fan was on after a short journey. So I checked the coolant, it was empty. So I topped it up and hoped that would be that. No she was dry again the next day. The water is leaking statically, it's dripping off the sump underneath. It looks like its coming from the front of the engine. Is this where the water pump is ? Also I think there is a belt missing from on of the pulleys, could this mean the water pump has seized and snapped the belt ? I'm looking at it from under the passengers seat . The van starts and drives , with no issues, it's obviously not going to move until I sort this out as I don't want to cook the engine !! Any advice would be gratefully received , great site by the ways, thanks Justin

it should have 2 belts on the waterpump/alternator/crankshaft.
and 1 belt to the aircon/crankshaft/tensioner.
when the waterpump leaks it does so out of 1 of 2 holes in the shaft casing. one you can see from the passy side, the other is hidden at the 6 oclock position behind the crank pulley so is very hard to spot.

dont drive it until it is bled or the head may pop.

Looks like the belt crankshaft/tensioner/aircon has gone/disappeared ! So it's the aircon motor directly below the alternator ? Are these belts easy to get hold of, independent motor factors etc ? Looks like I've still got a leak, not done the belt yet will look for the hole you said about . Bit concerned as to wether the leak perished the belt and where this leak is coming from , it's above the lower crank pulley on the forward face of the engine somewhere ! Is it worth trying some sort of leak stopper ?

Best you get the leak fixed as soon as you can. Would not advise driving with a water leak.

This particular engine is particularly susceptible to serious cylinder head damage should it overheat.

Get yourself a low coolant alarm as well. Pretty well "De Rigueur" for the 2.5 WLT equipped Bongo's.

Couple of pics of the pump showing where it commonly leaks. The leak is on the bottom side of the pump. This is the 6 o'clock location mentioned by Ady.

thanks steve, this hole is nearer to the engine than the one at the 3 oclock position the one that can be seen from the passy side, so it leaks first.

Thanks to all concerned for your help, it is leaking out of the 6 o'clock position. Just got the old one out, eventually ! Feels like the bearings have gone . The new one will be here Monday , hopefully the old girl is ok !!

The AC compressor pump is directly below the alternator.. If the AC belt has gone too? Then i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the compressor pump may have seized as well.....?!!! The belts are easy to get hold of, Bongo Towers do a fine line in belts.....

See this... http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... essor+pump

It could be possible one belt had jumped/snapped, then tangled with the other to do the same...??

As the others have said above. Get the coolant leak source sorted first...
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...
