Changing transfer box

Post by sunnyjim82 » Sun Sep 16, 2012 5:36 pm

Hi I have a 98 4wd bongo with a pooped transfer box, been driving it around for a while now in 2wd(front prop removed) with no trouble. I have now found a second hand transfer box for it and was wondering how hard/easy it is to change? If anyone can direct me to a link that may give a diagram or something that would be most helpful to ;)
Also would it be recommended to change the oil in the casing also or not?
I have done some searches on this without success.

the transfer box runs its own oil so deffo would need doing if you dont know its history.

faulty transfer box? theres not much inside them, just 2 shafts and a big chain?? changing them isnt a huge drama, there are some hidden bolts tho so be prepared for some fun!! its not a hard job.

It's seized/winding, up so at a guess the fluid has stiffened.
Do they have chains then? I thought they were a viscous coupling

would assume that the transfer box is the complete unit that bolts onto the rear of the gearbox?? would be wise to change the oil, (EP90 hypoid, about 1.5-6 litres)as you wont know the history of the unit.
