Bongo Fury

Hi all,

My bongo has had a broken aerial since I got it. It has the stump
of what I assume was the orignal aeiral, plus a screw shoved in it.
Can any reccomend a replacement aeiral, or how I can fix the old one?

I remember Kirsty (no longer on here sadly) doing something cunning, involving (I think) screwing a whip aerial into the broken stump and producing a very acceptable result. Hopefully someone else can remember the details, or have a search for 'Kirsty' AND 'whip'

the stump is made of brass, so very easy to drill /tap. just get a whip of the desired size and thread and screw it in.
chells has been like this for years.
if you take the swivel off to drill it etc dont loose the spring and ball bearing.

yeah common occurrence mine came with about two inches left I had an old radio in the garage that did not work, so I took the telescopic section off hack sawed a slot at the end and squeezed it together so it would fit tightly into the existing stump and wrapped a piece of silver sticky back foil that lagers use round the join jobs a good un

Tore mine in half at the car wash on Sunday. It's on the list.

I noticed the comments on that thread about poor reception with new aerial. I can only say I get great reception with my standard aerial aqlmost all of the time even when it is retracted and laid flat. I hardly ever put it up, so less risk of breakage. Might help others, plus I can't imagine a whip type replacement giving poor reception. Nice job that Briwy

Strangley I've only just changed mine, and I mean in the last 15mins. You can buy original mazda one from the bongo shop for less than £40. It took 10 mins to change, and that's including getting the tools out of the shed.

...but make sure you don't lose the spring ball bearings when doing the job, I thought I read once?

Me too, must get it sorted. Radio keeps blurring out at critical moments, espec Radio 4

Just going to hijack this thread briefly.....

My aerial keeps drooping and I've tried tightening the allen bolt as much as I'm comfortable with. I did remove the bolt and take the aerial off, to see if there was anything obviously wrong inside, but there was no spring or ball bearing. Is this my problem? We are talking about the roof mounted aerial here aren't we - as I have seen some on the front bumper?

Hi Dave,

There should be a ball and spring to make the aerial adjustable,if you want to make it rigid put a shake proof washer between the faces.
