SPEEDO CONVERTER CHIP

Post by YVANOVICZ » Thu Jul 20, 2006 7:57 pm

Do speed converter chips convert the odometer to clock up in miles, or just adjust the needle to show mph on a kmh face?
I need to know as I don't want to waste my money (?45) if a ?6 new face will do.

Having looked at the bumph with these chips it looks likje they convert it to show the distance recorded in miles, all well and good but... as the bongo at the moment records in kph how are we to explain to the mot tester or potential buyer that it has done so many kph previously and now it records in miles..basically it is not worth the problems that will invariably come with the change. Happy motoring.

can't the clock be wound back and a record made of this adjustment?

Our speedo is chipped, and I would presume that this is what normally happens. When we bought ours, we were not it's first British owners and the odometer was reading in miles, and tallied with the reg. documents. It is now reading 70,000 miles (approx), which seems to be about a reasonable average for a 1996 model. Still seems strange to have a speedo reading up to 180 MPH though, but it does impress the less well informed!

My speedo was chipped instead of having a fresh dial. The chip converts KPH to MPH and the odometer also reads in Miles as opposed to Kilometers.
The recorded distance ( in Kilometers ) was adjusted to the equivalent in Miles i.e. approx 75k now 47k miles.

I have recently bought a Bongo and although the dealer assured me it wa converte to MPH it isn't. Is the best answer then to get a chip and what is involved cost and fiting?
Thanks :)

Mine was chipped when bought from the importer. It was also 'clocked' from 96000km to 60000miles to make everything tally. But I hated the way the speedo only went 1/3 way round the dial. So I removed the chip and put a KM/MPH face on it. Then I clocked it back up to 98000km (I'd done 2000km by then). Now I'm very happy with it, and the MOT station was happy to record the 'mileage' in KMs instead.
But as they are so easy to clock, I sometimes wonder how many Bongo's have been clocked to make them appear a little fresher?

Chris.

Where do you get the chips from and how easy are they to fit?
