Help! Returning from Northumbria holidays (very nice time, thanks) with a caravan on tow the glow plug engine management light came on and the Ford Freda - a 4wd automatic V reg, 1999 first registered- dropped into limp mode.
After a long journey home with the RAC, my mechanic discovered (tech talk) Fault 1228 Wastegate failed open (under pressure). The exhaust gas recirculation valve readings are inconsistent, he suspects EGR valve sticking.
More expensively, it could be the turbo, but there was smoking from the exhaust beforehand and the light came on under load while I was pulling past a van at 60mph (it's a tiny caravan), so he thinks the EGR valve the most likely suspect.
Has anybody had this problem? Do I need to buy an expensive piece of kit or can it be cleared with a well-placed kick?
I hope it's the kick, because I was going to the Cropredy Folk Festival next weekend and I'd rather sleep in comfort than in the old tent.
Thanks
