Ecu matching gearbox

My ECU (2wd 2.5 diesel) has a model number of BM300 but the gearbox is BM310. I have noticed a few ECU's for sale with model number BM310 but they seem to be for 4x4. Do these numbers have to match or is BM300 generic?
