Removing Original Decals

Post by Bainsy » Thu Jun 28, 2012 9:17 am

After using Auto Glym Intensive Tar Remover over several hours and days whilst removing decal glue residue, on several mornings suffered from extreme dizziness. Dizziness gone now stopped using the stuff. Strongly suggest using rubber gloves and limit length of exposure to this solvent.

Google "caramel wheel". No more nasty fumes.

You would have to be quite brutal / careless to remove the paint with a caramel wheel. It is a possibility, but if you use common sense you will be fine.

I keep hearing this.. tried it once, never again. Gentle as could be, but made a nasty mess v quickly. And yes, I did watch the vid first.. :(

It's the old glue that is the problem, not the decals. On my '95 the glue has virtually bonded with the paint, impossible to remove..
tried everything.. :(

Mine came off with a heat gun set on low or try using a hair dryer if your not brave. They peel off fairly easy and you can use surgical spirit/petrol to wipe down after.

Got the large side decals off fairly easily with a hairdryer. It was the glue that was left behind that was the problem. The Auto Glym plus old credit card did the trick but whatever solvents are contained in it appear to be quite toxic if my extreme dizziness was the result of using it over several days. Surgical spirit sounds a good alternative.

I went to hospital long time ago after using the tar remover , i couldnt stand up with the dizziness .

As ive said in past posts PETROL will remove any glue UNLESS its been baked into the paint, due to the age.
Then it will not come off,

Iv used a toffee wheel on many decals and it easy to use once you get the hang of it, its also a lot quicker

To get the glue off I have been using 'Stain Devils No81' working a treat, used hairdryer to get the actual decal off and then blue roll and the Stain devil stuff, excellent and easy
