not usually as one side burns away and goes from several mm thick to as thin as a fag paper
then the plunger does not connect

fits most
are you sure batteries not flat as whirring means its turning to me
it clicks with bad contacts

While I think it is always a good idea to replace the contacts if the vehicle has seen a lot of service, in this case I agree, it sounds like the motor is not transferring the drive to the flywheel for some reason. Either way, without actually hearing it it is hard to say, but I think you need to remove and examine the starter motor.
The pattern contacts are £11.00 on ebay and easy to fit.

Fitted new contacts to spenners van yesterday and as wonkanoby said, the contact on the thick cable from battery side had worn down VERY thin.
We followed a fact sheet video which explains how to fit them - great stuff.

The whole job took about 2 hours but would have been much less if we hadn't stopped for a cuppa every 10 minutes.
Spenner bought the new set of contacts on ebay for £7.00. They came the day after he ordered them and had an excellent set of fitting instructions. (Spenner will hopefully provide the vendor details)

Just re-read this. That sounds more like the starter motor bendix is not engaging rather than contacts.
ie the motor is turning (whirring noise) but the bendix 'gear' is not engaging with the flywheel (stuck).
Does anyone else think so?
A sharp whack with a mallet on the side of the starter motor casing sometimes releases the bendix. Be careful not to strike the motor casing too hard cos it's a casting and could crack - AND DON'T use a hammer.
