V6 Towing Tyres

Post by OuterBongolia » Wed May 23, 2012 10:47 pm

Evening All,

We have a V6 camper that tows a boat of a weekend.

Tyres due for replacment soon so wondered if anyone could recommend something suitable?

Given weight of boat, van full of outboard etc a Van tyre seems like the logical choice, even if it means a harder ride...and something with a chunky grip for rubbish slipways.

Cheers

thats what i use on my tinny, due to the mrs kerb crashing it all the time. van tyres usually run at a higher pressure too. had them on a few years now(exept for my winter tyres) and they are spot on, im sure they are giving better fuel economy too.

Anything like Avon Avanza or Continental VanCo2 will be ideal, although there are also lots of cheaper van tyres available if you're on a tight budget.

Hi OuterBongolia,

I always thought that the bongo was a van,we actually call ours The Van

With the Load Index required for these vehicles you will probably be in the van tyre range.IE 8plr.

Cheers..

We recently fitted a set of Continental VancoContact 2 in 215/65 H 15 (same front and rear) and they are performing well. We have a rear conversion and tow our Caterham and carry a load of tools. I was looking for Vanco 2 but they weren't available in the correct size at the time so went for the VancoContact 2 which is alledgedly designed for "car derived" vans. Has the same load ratings but a more "car like" tread pattern.
I found it pretty hard to get any real information on the differences between the different makes and models of tyre - just lots of marketing spin.
Personally I'm not a fan of budget tyres as, at least in car applications, they always perform badly in magazine tests particularly in wet stopping and handling. I would be happy buying any of the main brands that met the required load ratings.
