did you earth the positive by mistake?

that would give you a full tank reading

See this post for a close up of the pin that needs the earth connecting to it http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 76#p491876

That's the biggest photo the forum would let me upload.

And the earth is from the the green (I think) wire. It's the one with zero volts anyway.

just earth the tank itself, easiest way,as they said the fuel level sender is a crude earth referenced rheostat and if you earth the wrong (signal)wire, it'll just read full

That's the problem then the Earth wire is BLACK and the signal is Light Green with Yellow stripe;
C1-04 is the sender;

Now when I purchased Bertie the old owner told me he had tried the earth and the sender was no good so I bought another from a scrappy.
When we tested this we found high resistance in the sender due to slight corrsion in the joints, so we removed the bolted on plastic bit from the bottom and fitted a new earth wire to the bolt, drilled a hole in the top mounting plate, put a nut and bolt through it with a EPDM rubber joint either side ( yes its fine with diesel) we then attached the wire to the bolt, put the lot in the tank and run the new earth from the body to this bolt.
If you measure the resistance from the top mountig plate top the bolt that secures the white plastic bit on to pick up pipe you should have almost zero, if not the joints are corroded and you need to fit this little extra earth wireto keep it accurate
Oh I assume the float arm isnt bent as this can also give a false reading

Ok thanks for all the help guys. Just to fill you in, a new earth to the black plug on top didn't fix it, and a new earth from the soldered joint on the fuel sender to the plug didn't fix it either. BUT hurrah a new earth from the tank lid to the vehicle body had it working dandy.

Thanks for your help :D
