Had to be recovered.

Post by emma & ian » Sun Mar 25, 2012 3:00 pm

Hi, long time no post.
Had a problem with my new shape bongo.
I was driving a long when the stearing started to pull to the left when ever I acelarated, I got to a roundabout and as I turned right the van started to judder violently and shake the steering wheel, at this point I realised things were bad so stopped.
I jacked up the front end and checked the wheel bearings. No play in bearings and no movement in the drive shafts.
At this point I made use of my free recovery (through insurance company)

Next morning I checked all bearings again, no play.
Went for a quick drive, no problems.
Jacked all 4 wheels up at once and put it into drive, n/s/f & both rear wheels spinning but o/s/f not moving, I can turn it by hand and it has no resistance.

Sorry for the long winded story.
Any ideas or help would be most appreciated.
Thank you. Ian.

It sounds like the front diff has failed or the driveshaft / CV joint has come adrift . When you had it jacked up did you try applying some resistance to the n/s/f wheel as that would transfer all the power to the o/s/f.

Hi.
No i haven't tried resistance on the other wheel. Will have to give that a try tomorrow evening after work.
If it is the diff is it possible to do away with the propshaft from the transfer box and make it 2wd?
Cheers Ian.

i'm not certain so don't quote me here but i seem to recall that on a 4wd bongo that they aren't actually 4wd but 3 or 2 [ a 4wd with limited slip diff is drive on both rear and one front wheel and a standard 4wd with non lsd is really one rear and one front wheel drive, i think it was northernbongolow posted this .
sounds as though this may be a 4wd with LSD,

if my memory is correct then it would explain why one of your front ones doesn't turn when jacked up but doesn't solve the original problem !

Thats right, and I believe the second prop shaft only drives if the other one starts going faster than it i.e. wheelspin. There was a thread quite recently that explained it really well.

sounds like you have an odd sized wheel or tyre on the front, check the size and the aspect ratio very carefully. or a very soft tyre, or different tyre brands can even cause problems.
the best way to run a 4 wheel drive is in my opinion is to have all 4 the same brand, pressure, wear, exactly, if you have to have 2 new and two part worns on, put the worn on the front as the rears can cope with being slightly larger. but never put the larger/newer pair on the front.

the sympyoms you had is called transmission wind up. this may only show up after the bongo has been driven in a straight line for some time as all the wheels need to rotate at the same rate, in your case one couldnt, until you turn. then it either lets the wind up go, or in your case fights back and starts to skip.
you may find you stopped in time and all will be fine if you sort the wheel/tyre problem out.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Thank you all the replys. Not had chance to check anything else out yet, will probably be the weekend now. Thanks again

Still thinking about converting to 2wd so if anyone has any ideas on how to go about doing it I look forward to your suggestions. Cheers Ian.

Just remove the front prop shaft, its simple to do & no oil will leak out. Clearly if there is a problem with the front diff/driveshafts/hubs you will need to address this at some point but you can just remove the propshaft with no ill effects.
