Have you checked the earth wire .. Here's a simple fix to try, before looking further.....

Mazda Bongo Faulty fuel gauge fix: No drilling, no carpet removal. It’s fairly common for the fuel gauge to read either intermittently or not at all. This can be due to an earthing fault.

First kneel down beside the driver’s door, and look underneath your Bongo. You’ll see the rectangular bulge of the fuel tank beneath the floor. A ‘lipped’ seam runs around the tank. This seam has holes pre-drilled into it.

Now look towards the rear of the Bongo - Just in front of the (near/drivers side) rear wheel there’s a ‘T’ shaped metal plate that runs from the sill to the chassis. There are 2 holes pre-drilled in this plate.

Select a hole on the tank, and a hole on the plate. Measure the distance between these holes. Cut a length of electrical wire to this length. Attach an eyelet type connector to each end of the wire. Use nuts and bolts (or other fixing) to attach the connectors to the holes. The job's done, now check the fuel gauge operation.

Try running a wire direct from the battery to it and see if it works then. Put an inline fuse in though just to be safe.

If it works then either bad connection somewhere, broken wire or as teenmal says, the fuse

Two white multi wire block connectors at the top/back of the dial pod... They run into a flexible membrane PCB across the back of dial pod.. Bad connection..?

It would be worth earthing the sender unit and or the fuel tank.

Have you got any other Bongo owners near to you?

If so, ask nicely and see if you can swap the whole instrument panel over, only takes a few minutes, and see what happens then.

If it works it could be a faulty gauge, if not then it points towards the sender or connecting wiring.

Where did you put the live +12volts ???????

The gauge is operated by a resistance to earth, the power to the gauge comes from within the console supply so if everything else is working in the console its unlikely to be the +12v line.


Have you tried earthing the fuel tank or cleaning and remaking the earth contacts on top of the sender ? That is the first thing as its the most common problem, well documented on the forum.

I am in St.Helens and have a set of clocks speedo, fuel gauge etc in the garage, but to be honest its easy to measure the senders resistance first.
I got a sender from a scrappy and found it didnt work due to bad connections in the sender unit its self, easy fix just need to fit it now.
