Bongo (unconverted) 30% heavier than Mazda 6 - will your insurers be happy?

Let's see - Kerb weight 2350Kg.

Assuming best-case with 25% of the weight on each wheel evenly, then that's 588kg per wheel.

Of course, the weight distribution isn't going to be perfectly even, so 12kg isn't enough leeway.

That's before you chuck it into a corner....

As a guide, 98 rated tyres are good for 750Kg each, so 600 Kg rated wheels seem under-spec.

Maybe some with some expertise could post up a list of wheels that not only fit but are 'weight safe' ..

I recently bought some Lexus GS300 rims with the right PCD @ 5 x 114.3 (bolt holes / spacing) but the bore size @ 60.1mm was to small as the Bongo needs to be 67.1mm (or bigger and use spigot rings) ...

http://www.wheelfitment.net/mazda

I think you will find the OEM R6 rims are 16" ..

I must admit that I am still searching for 'rims that would fit' and have seen a few Bongos with Mazda R6 and R8 wheels fitted and assumed (not always a good thing to do then) that they where OK ...

The stress on a wheel involves a number of calculations regarding sprung/ unsprung weight just for starters.

Hi there.

We have five-spoke plain-spoke alloys that were stated to be from a Mazda 3 - see this link
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0129-x4-Like4 ... 4ab32a4ebf

They also do a Mazda 6 wheel - see this link
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0167-x4-Like4 ... 4ab32a59e1

Ours have been on the Bongo for almost 4 years now, and we can both be described as "spirited" drivers  on occasion. Never had a moment's problem with the wheels :) . We have slightly oversized tyres on (235/55/17) which brings the rolling radius up a few percent, i.e. makes the speedo closer to accurate, and gives a tiny bit more mpg :D The offset is only a few mm out from the Bongo, and we have not had any concern about wheel bearings.

I can be prone to a bit of uneccessary concern/ worry about this sort of question, but our experience here should help reduce the anxiety a little :)

However, it is your call.

At the moment (2.0am 29/01/2011) if you do an eBay search for Mazda Bongo wheels ... there are 753 listed ..

I assume that some will be weight safe ... but which ..??

I also assume that Mazda at some stage offered genuine OEM Alloy rims .. who as any of those fitted ..??

I see lots of Bongos with alloy wheels ... surely someone knows there make .. load tolerances etc: .. ??

Price wise ... they are well out of my budget ..

Me personally .. I would sooner have a genuine car makers wheels .. obviously .. Mazda ... but Lexus .. Honda .. Hyundai ..etc; ..

This is one of the five Lexus GS300 that I bought and had refurbished for the Bongo ... with to small bore to fit the load bearing spigots on the hubs

Image

This is a Lexus wheel on my Toyota Estima ... the set have been on for well over six years ... I have to admit that I never took any 'safe weight' into consideration ..at that time ..I liked the alloys ..and they fitted .. end of storey ..

Image

I do have a list of compatible OEM wheels are far as PCD .. bore .. offset are concerned ... just never took there (unlisted) load bearing into consideration ...

Not to mention potholes, speed bumps etc........................

Have a look at some of the BMW fora to see how many problems they're having with lightweight wheels and low profiles.....................

I think the BMW issue is more to do with a manufacturing defect than improper fitment and they will replace under warranty if there is a problem.
