HELP HELP!!! Need new ECU and TPS for '95 Bongo 2.5 WLT FAST

Post by progroup » Tue Jan 10, 2012 3:28 pm

Where is everyone? Is there a UK holiday I am NOT aware of? :lol: :lol:

For nearly a week, I haven't been able to reach anyone by phone! I'm up daily at 5AM or 1PM your time.

eBay lists a few suppliers [unknown to me of course!] for these items. Is $100 for the ECU and $160 for the TPS kit about right?

My Bongo is SOL until I get these parts. Will no longer start/run, no power to TPS sensor, had to tow it home yesterday. Something may have shorted out.

This BongoBonnie is now my primary vehicle but I have TWO others insured on the road as well. I am 100% dependent on the UK for parts. I prefer NEW vs. Used because of the shipping and uncertainty/warranty.

This puppy is starting to nickel & dime me and I cannot simply cut my losses because virtually no one will buy here!

However, any ideas or references come to mind?

I apologize for being such a needy subscriber member to the Bongo Clan, but Canada may well be Syberia. I could contribute so much to this forum in general terms. Some of you folks have a working knowledge specific to Bongo vans which exceed my knowledge. But I understand and fix almost anything myself. I used to own my garage business back in 1980. I do this stuff because it is still a hobby [a practical hobby!]. Besides, our labour rates here are $110/hr for general mechanics. My problem is that no one wants to work on my Bongo.

After sucessfully rebuilding the FIP and back running, the flashing HOLD light points to the TPS or ECU. Voltage diagnosis was erratic until after I cleaned the connectors with electrical solvent - no more power through to TPS harness. Dead! Checked all fuses, looks okay. What did I do? Did I short something in the diagnosis phase?

Is there a fuse specific to the ECU :?: :?: :?:

I find using the CDROM version of the electrical service manual to be an arduous process at best. Takes hours to figure out colours, relays, etc. Is there in existence, a REAL Bongo Shop Manual? I have all three and they are poor and inaccurate translations.

Help Help!
Dave

PS. PM me if you prefer!

I don't have a copy of the service manual in front of me but the ECU pinout is available in there. Can you identify the ECU power supply pins and confirm ECU is receiving power? Does the glow plug light come on on the dash when you turn the key? This is ECU controlled and should be a reliable indication that the ECU is powered and not (totally) shot.

Assuming your ECU is running you should be able to locate the 12V TPS supply on the ECU connector and poke a multimeter probe in there to confirm voltage out of the ECU on this pin. I'm making a wild assumption that there is a steady 12V out and a variable voltage return. I'd then check continuity from ECU harness to TPS plug.

If you're beyond this, no harm done. Good luck, I'll chip in where I can. ;)

Not quite sure what info you wanting Dave, there are two fuses that power the ECU;
permanent power at all times from Image
and switched power via;
Image
The wiring diagrams (ok WIRING not CIRCUIT I know) I think you have the CD for but they are also on line for 1995 thru to 1999 here

Colour code info, is a bit of a pain agreed especially for pre 1997 where you have to identify the symbols rather than just the letter codes! But they are on the on-line version, and you can zoom in to see the symbols as large is as practical given the print quality ;-) Use the Image for the look-up sheet.
You have the Fault codes I believe ? If not then here is a link to as much info as is known http://www.philmcfadden.co.uk/MazdaDiagnosticBox.htm

Oh ya! That's my type of diag stuff for sure! Great pics too! Thanks so much Geoff for the info. Steve helped too by identifying that a main pwr fuse existed in the fuse box. I had only checked the ones under the bonnet!

Anyway, this info will aid in the code clarification [im thinking code 12 for the TPS]. BongoBonnie is back running after swapping a mini-blade fuse from another circuit. I had only standard and maxi blade fuses in stock. Off to the parts store again!

Cheers,
Dave

Glad you've got some info - I'd been reading your posts and felt for you but didn't have a lot to contribute to make your problem disappear................
