New Battery but Bongo not starting

Post by cazzyblues » Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:32 pm

I recently replaced my original battery with a super duper new one about a month ago. The old one was fine it seemed until I locked the side door before it had soft closed properly, came back a week later to a dead battery. Charged it up and all was fine for about a week, then dead again. Decided to buy new battery. All has been well until today, when all I got was clicking sound from battery, no turn over from engine. I have looked at the terminals and they seem secure....this is all new to me so I don't really know what I am lookging for but I am sure I would know if the terminals weren't secure. All internal lights work, the headlights work, the central locking is working although side door seems to be behind with the clicking noise but does soft close. The last time I tried to start it all the warning lights flickerd along with the clicking noise of the battery. Any suggestions or advice please.

I last used the Bongo day before yesterday and all was fine, but it hasn't had a long run for a few weeks.

Sounds like two possibilities;
1. The original problem was not the battery as such, but the alternator is faulty and is not charging the battery.
2. The starter contacts need replacing on the starter motor see here for a recent discussion easy to replace http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=51924

Thanks for your replies and links, waiting for homestart at the moment but the kit sounds good. Maybe homestart will tell me what is wrong even if they can't fix it.

Bongo started with a little help from the Homestart man. He checked it out and said no problem with battery or alternator. I took Bongo for a nice long run so fingers crossed it will start tomorrow.

Which super duper battery did you get and where from? I think I will be needing one ASAP.

Hi dandemann8
It was a Bosch 95amp. Cold cranking if I remember rightly was 800 amp. Sorry I don't know anymore details. People I work for got it for me at cost price £83, I think normal price would be £120 quid at least. It doesn't fit the tray but they managed to secure it in the space.

Hi Cazzyblues,

Might i ask if you have an alarm/immobilizer/remote CL fitted...? Had your old battery voltage dropped to about 10.5 volts..?
Have you checked where the earth strap off the battery negative terminal runs connects behind the wing..?

Hi Jaylee, No alarm fitted. The original old battery was dead as a dodo. My ex charged it up for 3 days and all was fine for a week or two then completely dead again. Got new battery fitted all fine, leaving it a week or so before starting and taking it out all fine, until yesterday just clicking noise when turning on ignition, although taken out a couple of days before just local shopping but no sign of problems then. Homestart checked out battery yesterday after starting it for me and said it was taking charge and battery and alternator ok.

As for the strap you mentioned I haven't looked for that.....I am new to all this as my ex used to look after the vehicles and still does for my Belingo but doesn't want to know about this one really lol.....he advised me not to get a camper lol but hey I make my own decisions now. So job for today look for strap. I will report back later. Fingers crossed Bongo will start today.

MBONGO, the homestart man checked battery was taking charge and ok'd it at 14 volts. Said alternator was alright. Had a look round to make sure nothing obvious was left on or open like side door. Seemed like he was a bit lost for answers.

so did the home start man have to jump the battery? so was it flat?
or was the battery charged and the starter being at fault these could be a seperate issue from the old battery failing or linked

If the battery was not flat then the starter kit is the way to go asn long as you dont have the winter pack (double battery) as its a different starter

If the battery was flat then you have a draw on the battery and you need to find that, have you had a radio change by any chance

I wouldn't discount that either... (not knowing the complete service history on the van.. What harm would it do..?!!

Some radio memory back ups can cause a drain...

Did the home start man check the alternator under load?? With the lights, fan, radio, rear window demister wipers on...

What was the voltage the battery had dropped to before getting the van started?? I'm guessing 10v judging by the clicking description???!
