is this japanese coolant ??

Post by Northern Bongolow » Mon Dec 12, 2011 5:55 pm

did a coolant change over the weekend for a member who quite rightly was unsure of what coolant he had in and whether he was adequately protected. the bongo was bought from a dealer forecourt, but not a bongo (specialist).
his thoughts and mine were to drop the coolant and replace certain key parts while the system is down.

the coolant was dropped into a container from the rad drain point, and several key pipes were removed and the internals of the system/rads/matrix's/engine were examined, and the through flows checked, all appeared very good.
on inspection of the dropped coolant it was found to have a 3 inch tall head that a pint of bitter would be proud of, this stood proud and crusty for a good ten minutes  .
my question is, is this jap coolant?, the reason for this question is really to help others to spot jap coolant, ive bled/changed coolant on a few bongos and have never seen coolant like this.
it was really dark green, but as we know this means nothing #-o .
the system was really well flushed and new oat coolant put in, the owner reports several improvements, but these are mostly due to the gen mazda stat and fan switch changes.
anyone with more experience than i know the answer please.

Hi,
Looks like aerated coolant, faulty auto box cooler (slight leak) Or Home Brew.

Don't think it has any thing to do with the Nippon antifreeze that these vehicles were designed for.

Cheers,

thanks for the reply teenmal, it was certainly airated #-o ,to the point of nearly escaping from the catch container.
looking at dave and mels thoughts these could have something, the system insides were particularly clean, and it could have been something that reduces surface tension of the coolant like soap or similar, i once saw one that had screenwash added to the coolant by mistake, that was really clean inside 8) , but was removed as we didnt know what it did to the coolant addatives.
waterwetter is a strong contender, anyone used it.
keep em coming please.

Hi Ady
in the "old days", i've used water soluble oil to aid with lubing the water pump, (when they stopped putting grease nipples on 'em), but never seen frothing. Using anything other than a certified coolant is a fools errand in my opinion.
Cheers

In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

i tend to agree helen, the modern coolant is most likely a delicate blend of toxic crap  and if you play with it you could at least damage its qualities.
heard good things about waterwetter though, and some of the race boys use it, but they wont keep the coolant in long.
like mel was saying it could be something like fernox used in domestic heating systems #-o . maybe the last owner was a plumber 8) .
