Vanishing coolant and hot heaters....

Post by AmandaR » Fri Nov 25, 2011 12:16 pm

Hello all. I know that this topic has been well covered, but after searching the forum, I still can't find the answer to my problem. The coolant in my Bongo (Petrol, 1,990 cc) was going down at an alarming rate. I took it to my local garage who found the the thermostat had come away from its mounting. They refitted it and resealed it, and fixed the leak.
After a short journey, I noticed that the coolant was still going down and that the heaters were blowing hot air even though they were turned off. Back at the garage no leaks were detected and he told me to keep an eye on the coolant. I just checked it again, and after a 15 mile journey yesterday the coolant is below the 'low' level again.
I am not happy about driving to Wigan to have it checked out, so thought I would pick your collective brains before going back to the garage.
Thanks in advance!

As it's a 2 lt petrol you do not have all the normal problems bleeding the cooling system.....You should be able to just let it tick over untill it gets up to tempreture topping up the coolant (50/50 mix) until it all settles down.....I would have thought the garage would have done this already,,,the 2lt does run very cool so keep going until the bottom hose gets hot.

It turns out that there was also a tiny hole in one of the hoses, so the coolant leak was hard to find. Happy that it is fixed and running like a dream again :)
