De rusting parts the easy way

Post by The Great Pretender » Sun Nov 20, 2011 1:50 am

I came across this system a while ago and thought it interesting.

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/andyspatch/rust.htm

It sat at the back of my mind until a friend asked how he could de rust some of his metal detecting finds from 1200 ish AD and on.
So we tried it. Blue Peter would be proud of me...............   ..........Instructions................

Get an old bucket, stick a piece of mild steel in it then put another piece of conductive metal across the top. Find an old mobile phone charger and connect the positive to the mild steel and the negative to the piece on top.
Fill the bucket with tap water and for every 2lt add a desert spoon of washing soda.
Dangle the bits you want to de rust via wire from the top piece into the bucket and switch the charger on.   The shaded area around the object are bubbles.

Hope you find it interesting, will show results later.

As you're producing hydrogen gas, please make sure you do this in a ventilated area. Probably not critical, but better safe than sorry.

He wont have been getting rust off of his metal detecting finds, it will have been hard crud and the finds will most likely have been bronze or copper with the odd silver, he will have to have been very careful and kept his eyes on them as stripping them to base metal would ruin them :P
Its ok to use Electrolysis on your rusty Bongo bits though
