It sat at the back of my mind until a friend asked how he could de rust some of his metal detecting finds from 1200 ish AD and on.
So we tried it. Blue Peter would be proud of me...............

Get an old bucket, stick a piece of mild steel in it then put another piece of conductive metal across the top. Find an old mobile phone charger and connect the positive to the mild steel and the negative to the piece on top.
Fill the bucket with tap water and for every 2lt add a desert spoon of washing soda.
Dangle the bits you want to de rust via wire from the top piece into the bucket and switch the charger on.
