Clutch release bearing - where to buy?

Post by Kitegirl » Tue Oct 04, 2011 8:35 pm

Hi All,

Am having something of a mare with my Manual 1995 4x4 Bongo at the mo...

Firstly, I thought my fan belt was on the way out (mild screeching) so bought a new set of belts and had them all changed- had only done them all last year. The problem didn't stop. I've now been told it's the clutch release bearing, but I only had a new clutch put on it last summer (2010). I now can't find anywhere that sells these parts without having to buy the entire clutch kit... Anyone know where I can get one?

Am awaiting news from the garage as to whether or not the head gasket is on its way out, and also whether the awful noise it's making is a problem with the power steering or something else.

I wish there was a proper decent Bongo mechanic in Hull :(

Any help on the clutch release bearing sourcing would be much appreciated.

Dee :)

i have a good spare release bearing and a good clutch plate that i removed from my 4x4 manual bongo when my clutch was playing up, it was found to be the pressure plate that was faulty on mine. even after that was replaced it wasnt over, the slave and master cylinders had to be replaced.
all im saying is---is the bearing really the faulty part, or is your garage rubbish.
sounds like you have a few issues going on (or not) that they may or not fix. it may be time to find a different garage.

westonwarrior was telling you to do a search, top right of the screen, put in manifold stud in the topic and it will chuck up lots of past threads, click on each one and have a read it may help. this may be your strange noise. or check the powersteering fluid level, its the clear container with a black top under the drivers seat, check its filled up to the marked full line.

be very careful if the garage just says its the head gasket love, in that patronising way, ask them if they know where the bleed pipe is on the bongo, if they say they dont know, walk away.

pm me if you wish.

Right, firstly thanks ever so much to those who've taken the time to reply. I don't know what I'd do without this forum!

The garage are now saying they don't think there's anything the matter with the head gasket (praise be!) and that they think it's a leak on one of the pipes. They're going to get it on the ramps properly tomorrow and see if they can fix that. If so, that's why the water was leaking, and hopefully that should fix that...

The noise was something to do with the power steering and they've put some (I think) oil in there and apparently that is 'better' now. They didn't say it was A-OK...

I'm still after the bearing though. I'm not 100% sure that's what it is, but I only replaced the entire clutch last year and that wasn't a cheap job.

So am going to try replacing that first (if Northern Bongolow will sell me the spare one he has) and then see how things go from there.

The garage are good to me. I've known the owner for 16 years and, as a single woman, have been had right over in the past by other places. They won't rip me off, but also they don't really know Bongo's that well. But there isn't a garage in Hull that does....

Thanks again people!

pm me your phone number and we can chat on the phone if you like. (i work nights)
you can buy the bearing at a very reasonable cost, no problem,
what are the symptoms that make you think, or the garage think that its the thrust bearing. the best way to describe the noise they often make is a grunting noise as the clutch is lifted while the engine speed is fed into the clutch, this can also rattle or whine while the gearbox takes up the speed differential.
what does the peddle feel like when you lift it in gear??.

Hi Dee,I would be inclined to contact the garage that done the Expensive clutch replacement last year,It should last a lot longer than that with FW&T.The bongo manual clutch is not very different from many other vehicles,in fact many others use the same components, any competent mechanic should be able to Diagnose and rectify the fault.

This is just some of the vehicles that use that thrust bearing..........

PS your Mechanic should be able to test the bearing in situ,Without removing the box.

Good luck..

Re the power steering, if it needed topping up, it's leaking somewhere, keep an eye on the level, chyances are it's a relatively easy fix, may be worth trying some power steering stop leak, if not, it's usually the top pinion seal, which can be replaced in situ, this thread should help - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ak#p510798.
