Stub on air intake

Almost finished changing head on spenners Bongo - Noticed broken stub on air intake (back of engine) - see pic - one of the stubs arrowed.
Had a couple of ideas from Ady already. Has anyone else had this and how did you fix it?

That's the rocker cover breather connection isn't it? Not high pressure or anything, it'll be oily so may be a bit of a bugger to get anything to stick, repair tape type stuff may do it? mebe worth seeing if any of the breaking bongos such as ebygum has that whole bit of pipe as a replacement? not a common break that one.

You could try a brass straight connector the correct size and screw it in.

or blank it of and put a "T" in the unbroken stub .

Problem solved - easy rock solid fix. will post details and pics later. (got engine to start first)

Hi Kirsty - No, it's the air intake that comes directly from the air filter.

The basic idea for this was Adys.

The broken stub on the air intake pipe from the air filter


We took a basic cycle repair kit


Selected a valve


Discarded the valve cap


Drilled a 3mm diameter hole through the valve


In the position of the original stub, drill a hole 4.5mm diameter through the pipe wall

Using a pair of pliers to hold the valve, screw it into the 4.5mm hole (the valve will make its own thread in the plastic pipe).
The plastic air pipe is thicker at the stub location so the actual thread is about 5mm deep.

and hey presto - a VERY rigid stub.

Sorry - missed the 2 suggestions of a brass connector. Would have been a better engineering solution though. Only problem is size. The bore of the rubber pipe that fits onto the stub is only 5mm diameter (can you get them? and where from?), and to be honest, the valve was to hand so avoided a trip to B&Q or wherever. Cheap too.

I was looking at the first pic you put up with the arrows with 2 to choose from & meant the right hand one which jumped out at me, which IS the rocker breather connection Wasn't paying attention enough (it was early hours of the morning ) to see the other one.

Sorry - I can see why you misunderstood - my poor choice of words. The reason I showed 2 arrows is that I did the original post quickly from memory, and wasn't quite sure which of the two it was.

You may find a more noticeable change in the noise on that new stub you made for the air intake/breather pipe...?!!


It should sound more like the chorus of Earth Song.... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh.....!
