Linkage on heater air intake under bonnet

Post by Poohbear » Fri Apr 15, 2011 1:20 pm

Behind the air intake cowl under the bonnet of the Bongo, just above the heater fan there is a flap that appears to have a filter in it (or at least it has foam material i=on the face of it. This appears to pivot from the top and at the left hand end the end of the spindle sticks out and has a flat section and a hole which should be attached to some kind of linkage. if you look at the first picture in David Small's data sheet "Heater Repair" you'll see what i mean. the linkage can be clearly seen on the left hand side of the air intake. I appear to be missing this linkage completely!

What does it do? Should I have it? Where can I get one from? I hadn't realised it was missing until I read the data sheet and saw that first picture. I did think ti a bit odd that there was spindle with nothing attached to it.

Help! :o  :?

it depends on the type of heater controls, the one in the picture is possibly manually controlled by a sliding knob on the heater controls, if you have a digital heater control, you'll find it is electronically operated from a servo inside, try putting the heater on to recirculate and the flap should close, there does'nt appear to be an actual filter to filter the incoming air.

There will no doubt be a more informed member along at some point to correct any errors stated :D

As darkstar points out it depends on the type of heater/aircon controls you have. The flap you refer to is coated in foam in order to make an air tight seal as far as I can see.
If you have electronic heater controls then you could try opening the bonnet, turning on the ignition and asking sombody to watch what happens when you press the top left button (marked with a recirculation symbol) on the heater control panel.

I think you will find the spindle moves to a different position. It does on my van anyway and this is what darkstar is suggesting too. Obviously if it doesn't move there could be a fault.

There was no filter for air coming into the front air intake on my bongo. A failing given the amount of insects and fluff I had to remove to get the aircon to work! I have some photos of a simple fix TBA. :D

That flap is controled by the lever that determines either recycled or freash air.
