Petrol 2 litre cylinder head gasket

My 2 litre Bongo has a blown cylinder head gasket. I am told that this engine is difficult to repair for reasons I don't understand and its suggested that a better bet is a replacement second-hand engine. Does anyone have experience of replacing the gasket on this engine?

I've never had to do one in a Bongo 2.0 but parts are available if it purely a head gasket that is gone I can't understand their reasoning.

Thanks for the comment Paul, it gives me some confidence in going for a repair.

You need to find out why a unit change is warranted ,rather than a head gskt and possibly a skim if any distortion is evident? Which would be more cost effective than changing the unit(engine).and is it a garage with bongo experience ,do they work on these vans regulary? There are a few questions to be asked/answered before money changes hand me thinks.hope this helps .

Hi Stevie thanks for your post. The garage has experience of Bongos but not head gasket on 2 litre. The story from the dealer who has many Bongos and uses the garage in question was that it would be better to change engine but now suggests that a repair is more cost effective. It is very difficult to get consistent advice from them. I have done engine repairs years ago before engine management systems etc so wonder just how difficult Bongo repair can be.

Hi Mo's motors of Fenstanton did the head gasket on my 2.5 diesel, might be worth giving them a ring, i'd say that once both seats have been removed and the centre brace, access should be plentiful.
P.s if you need a head skim st ives engine services are the kiddies

The access to the engine on the 2l is the same as the 2.5d, and the head/head gasket is no more difficult to replace. There's a factsheet on changing the 2.5 head gasket, which would give you an idea about the access and should reassure you.

Would agree, 20 mins with a air or electric gun should see the seats out and centre panel off and then there is more space than under the bonnet of your average euro saloon. 2 litre has a inlet manifold/plenum that curls arround over top of engine which is a little bit of a pain but other than that once it is off, there is nothing more complicated doing a head gasket on any other 4 cylinder, just follow good recommended practices.
