Battery Question

Hi All,
I currently have 2 85amp baterries fitted on my van.The leisure battery has been slowly losing its charge over time and the main battery is due for replacement too.The question is can i replace both with say 100amp ones What would you recommend please and from where

Hi,
I know from my caravan days that the 100amp leisure is a monster not sure if it would fit in a bongo. My leisure battery is an 85 i think and that just fits the battery tray. I will check in the morning and post a reply. I havent checked the other (starter battery) but it is a bit bigger than the leisure one. Sorry for the next question probably teaching granny to suck eggs but, you do realise that starter and leisure batteries are different, i`m sure someone can explain on here better than me.Sorry if i have caused insult just covering all bases.

Both my batteries are the same which may explain why the leisure battery started to die first.I understand from previous posts that a 100 amp battery will fit If i'm replacing both is it better to fit the biggest both the same size or can i have different sizes and will that make any difference regarding split charging ect I have a full conversion with a compressor fridge if that makes any difference Regards Dave

Yes fit the largest capacity batteries that will fit the trays and not foul the bonnet as it comes down! The batteries do not have to be the same capacity, but do make sure that they are of the same lead acid variety, by that I mean don't fit a Calcium type with say a standard one, they have slightly different voltages which can cause confusion as a minimum and under charging of one battery as well.

Hi Dave,
If i recall the split charger in mine works by sensing when the starter battery is being charged or around 14 volts it then triggers the relay and current flows to the leisure battery. If the relay senses a drop in current ie. engine stop it closes and prevents the lower charged battery draining the other. I`m sure i have 2 different amperage batteries. this wont matter because as i said earlier they are used for entirely different purposes. With regard to your fridge i would think this only works with a hook up or when you have the engine running as a fridge would normally drain a battery very quickly. Hope this helps i will look at my batteries tomorrow and let you know what i have. Think somebody more knowledgable will be along soon to help more

But it isn't ANY 100 amp battery that will fit, you have to have the right shape and the right size 100amp battery to fit in the tray AND allow the bonnet to shut.
