Bongo Cuts Out?

Post by jimpearceuk » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:48 pm

Well I was less than an hour into Bongo ownership when on the motorway she cut, just joining the end of a slow moving queue and all the ignition lights came on.

With some help from a very nice man from green flag she started, you have to press the throttle to the floor and just keep turning over, and after 10 or more seconds she starts, initially rough but she goes.
I then drove 200 miles and at 60 - 70 all is well, as soon as you stop, rough as a dog and she cuts - while ticking over the revs will drop down suddenly and she was sometimes recover others just cut.

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted as i can't trust her and that’s bad with ownership so recent, sob sniff.

Thanks in advance Jim

i would start by checking the fuel system, lines for leaks/new filter and the little filter in the inlet banjo(gets blocked.)then check the air side of things.do a search on here for bonjo filter, plenty to read there.
was it from a dealer or private sale.

welcome to the mad world of bongo ownership :) keep smiling,

might be a vacum thing, breather on tank blocked

give it run then remove the tank cap, sucking sound indicates a vacum forming

That happens when you remove the cap, which is something then I suppose?

Thanks Jim

Thanks, Got it booked in so fingers crossed.

It was from a dealer, in Colwyn Bay - hence the initial 250 mile drive, that being said was an effortless drive down in terms of covering distance.

Thanks for your comments.

I hope I can smile when I see the bill :(

Had the same problem whilst on our way to the bash in Looe,a real nightmare up some of the biggest hills in the world !lol
On the way home i took the fuel cap off and problem solved ,just needed to replace the cap.
Does it have the same problem when its started from cold ?

I don't know just how relative any of the excellent above info is on a 2000+ bongo... Isn't that the fly by wire (different fuel pump) gen bongo? If so, pound to a pot noodle the fault is sensor related! Shouldn't the dealer foot the bill anyway seeing as you've only just bought it? The way i see it he owes you a tank of diesel too!

If the problem is the same when it's cold, then it is not usually a blocked breather in the fuel cap. See THIS LINK for more details.
It sounds air/fuel related, possibly the seals on the diesel pump?

But if that would cure it, it would be a cheap fix to try. :)

But as Ste (BDC) has said, as the problem has appeared so quickly after buying it, it's the dealers responsibility. You could ring them to make them aware of the problem and give them the chance to fix it for you.

That's IF the dealer is aware of the problem Lorna... An older bongo with similar symptoms at a local dealer had similar issues (it turned out to be a failing fuel pump) But the short runs in and out of the dealers yard didn't show any problems. The problem only occured after a run, then dropping the revs...

Thanks for all the advice - I spoke to the dealer, so far so good - he said get it in somewhere and he will foot the bill so let's see - I got a 3 month warranty which is why I paid more from a dealer.

I was talking to the guy at the garage today and we were looking at it - luckily it did it! and while we were messing the glow plug and hold lights were on - so error codes to.

Jeee I hope I didn't by a lemon, it does not look oval shaped and yellow at all!

Thanks again to all, will keep the info coming as and when

 Oval shaped and yellow! Nice one Jim! it sounds like you are on the right track anyway, and it also sounds like the dealer is a good un and will honour the warranty... Report back your resullts on here won't you? All good info for the techie archive...

My thoughts too...... has all the symptoms.... but if a fuel cap manages to fix it then its a good 'un
