New to Bongo world, so a bit of advice please

Post by Pete J » Thu Aug 12, 2010 8:08 pm

Just got our first Bongo, and love it. In 6 weeks we've managed 3 weekends away, all of them ace. First question:the blowers on the front consol are always on even with air con. turned off, is this normal ? There's a small box (the size of a cigeratte packet) below the left hand side of steering wheel. It has lights and electric and Martyn at Imperialcars told me it was something that was only used in Japan, what is it ? and finally on the right hand side of the drivers steering column (at knee level) is a small black button, what does it do ? anything.

the button will most probably be the rear fog switch.

The black box sounds like a turbo timer

The fans shouldnt be on unless you turn them on, I presuming its climate (digital type) and not the slider type?

Welcome to the forum :D
You should be able to turn the fans off, do you mean there's still a ram air effect as you're driving?

Box on the left could be a turbo timer? try turning the unit on with the engine running, then turning off the engine, it should carry on for a predetermined, settable time - a pic would help the diagnosis, guidance on uploading here - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... m.php?f=42

The switch could be the rear fog, should only come on with the lights on.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

the box may be a turbo timer,it lets the engine idle after u have turned it of to let the turbo cool down,if that's what it is .put some pixs on it will help.

Many thanks for prompt replys. I'm away working at the mo, so I'm relaying advice to 'her indoors'. Info about small box sounds right as when fiddling with it, there's definite difference in engine tone. The blowers, well it's not a slider type, just push buttons to set controls. Even when turned off there's a good breeze blowing. Very nice on a summer afternoon, but not so good at other times. Only thing we can do is point blowers up and away from us and even turn on heaters/ac and set temperature up. Son in law is a qualified mechanic and has promised to look for me.

FAQ for the heater/ac here that may help - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=28727
If you put it onto recirc, it should close the scoop intake & decrease/stop the ram air effect. If it is the fan sticking on it could be a relay sticking? down behind the drivers side headlight there are 2 banks of 3 relays onder black covers, could be one of those I think?

Yep, no closure on the actual vents...
Try setting to recirculation (Maybe a picture of a car with an arrow doubling back on itself?) will stop the air coming in from the front when the fans off...

Recirculation draws air from the cab (passenger front footwell) so when the fan is off you should have nothing through the vents when moving.. Unless your passenger lets a sneaky one go!!?

Damn! Kirsty strikes first again....
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

Another possibility for the cigarette sized box is if it has a credit card size slot in the top it then it will almost certainly be an automatic pay device for toll bridges / booths. Only for use in Japan. I had one in my latest Bongo aquisition. I just carefully removed it and made safe the electric feed to it.
