aghhh just overheated

Post by randombit » Thu Aug 12, 2010 6:59 pm

Hi all, Van overheated today (stuck on a hill cause of an accident), water pouring from the overflow pipe from header tank and air in the system, have found a leaky hose (the rear heater hose 61-213). trouble is when it overheated I put the heaters on front and back full blast to help her cool dwn and it was only blowing out cool air!! does this mean the thermostat is shot??
have found the hose for about £21 anybody know of a cheaper supplier?
am going away nxt wk so...................

Stats probably o.k. but as you are going to have to replace the hose/refill the system and bleed (I hope you know how to do that)...you may as well put a decent Mazda stat in whilst your about....then it's fingers crossed that all is well and you haven't blown the head....hate to say this but.. a early warning system fitted, probably would have prevented it getting as bad as it did.

:( bu66er.
Price sounds about right for the hose, Has the stat been replaced at any time in your ownership? always a good opportunity to get a new one in there, doesn't take much for it to not be opening fully when it should, which means it won't be getting the flow through the rad when it should, make sure its a genuine mazda one if possible. Have you gat any temp or coolant alarms fitted? good opportunity to think about it if not, may have saved you the grief as the normal temp gauge won't move until it's already overheating  Make sure it is bled properly, there's a vid on youtube that may help if you're not familiar with it & check all the other hoses etc.
Fingers crossed you've not done any lasting damage [-o<
too slow #-o

Hi guys I do have a coolant alarm fitted, unfortunately could not do anything about my position as the road was 2 narrow to pull in (north cornwall) and the traffic was tight. even with alarm fitted temp gauge sits at around 1.30 (none of this 11am lark, advise on why that is would be appreciated), thermo not been replaced by us had van about 13mths, have been shown how to bleed it but will check utube make sure we r doing it right!!

You say you have a coolant alarm fitted...is that a Mason alarm ???if so 1.30 on the gauge is o.k....however if it's not a Mason and it is just a Low Coolant Alarm then if 1.30 is normal you have plumbing issues.....If my alarm ever went off I would pull over and everyone would have to get round me or wait.

Sounds like you've got the Mason alarm rather than the coolant alarm if it's altering the temp gauge, I wouldn't worry unduly if it doesn't run at 11 oclock, lots of factors such as coolant condition, age of temp sensors, how clean/good all the connections are, etc. When I fitted new temp sensors it actually started reading higher on the temp gauge but the measured temp was no higher, so ignore these folk that crow about theirs running at 11 o clock with the mason or the modification, it means nowt as it's not an absolute temperature reading, it's just a guide

Yeah it is a mason alarm, unfortunately I couldnt jus stop, there had been an accident about half mile up the road an police trying to sort out the road. it is chaos here at this time of year anyway but throw in an accident an all hell breaks loose.

Sorry to hear about your incident... Your heaters were blowing cold air because the water leak due to your hose split had depleted enough water out of the system to also empty the heater matrix', hence no heat from the heaters.

Header tanks can be ordered from a Mazda dealer or Bongobits. Around £130 for a new one or you could try and get a decent 2nd hand one £30'ish.
Examine the bottom of any tank for "near" splits......I have yet to see a used tank that is not well on the way to a split underneath....
